What is a vertiport? "A vertiport can be thought of as a mini-airport: a take-off and landing area on a multi-storey car park with a terminal that can be realised in an adjacent office building with additional work areas. Specially designed for vertical take-off and landing eVTOLs. On the site of a former ammunition factory, there was a small bus manufacturer in the mid-1990s - one of the largest in Europe. Today, in 2024, with 25,000 buses and coaches and 1st place for BEV and FCEL buses in Europe, it has certainly given these big players a run for their money. Solaris is and will continue to grow - not only in Europe, but also in the USA and Canada. The Solaris dachshund, which has been around from the very beginning, has always stood out with its green colour. Today more than ever, green for the environmental friendliness of a bus was chosen with care back then. And so was the dachshund, as Krzysztof Olszewski explained to omnibus.news during a visit to Bolechowo in 1996. According to Olszewski, the short legs symbolise the ability of the buses to provide low and comfortable access for older people and the disabled. Exciting, in the truest sense of the word! Today, following the press conference, the first news: the intercity bus segment is firmly established in Europe. Solaris presented the InterUrbino series in 2009, which has been built in Bolechowo, Poland, since 2010 – with a classic combustion engine. Now a BEV version is on the cards to do justice to the role of market leader in zero-emission drives in Europe in the intercity bus segment too. Of the 1,456 Solaris buses produced in 2023, 82% had an alternative drive system, as Javier Iriarte explained at the annual press conference. If BEV and FCEV drives are added together for new registrations in Europe (EU27, NO and CH) in 2023, Solaris comes in first place across Europe with a 15.2 percent market share. Second place goes to the Chinese brand BYD, with Mercedes-Benz in third place on the podium for newly registered BEV and FCEV buses. At the end of the annual press conference, when asked by omnibus.news, Iriarte said that Solaris would counter the growing competition from China and the aggressive pricing policy with quality and service. And with a complete portfolio of different vehicle sizes and drive systems, as Javier Iriarte, who has been in charge of Solaris since January 2023, emphasized. And this also includes an electrically powered intercity bus. At the annual press conference, he gave an initial preview of the new series. Visually, it is a further development of the InterUrbino family, peppered with subtle reminders of the Vacanza buses, which not only fits the company image, but also fits very well into the portfolio. Further details on the technical equipment will be communicated next year. However, the company is already in talks with its first customers in order to sound out not only initial orders, but also the detailed requirements in the various areas of operation in Europe. Sales amounted to € 14.8 billion - an increase of 31% compared to the previous year (€ 11.3 billion). The number of new vehicles sold increased by 37% compared to the previous year - to more than 116,000 units. Despite strong offsetting effects such as higher material and energy prices, adjusted operating profit rose by €935 million year-on-year to €1.08 billion - the best figure in the company's history. The adjusted operating return on sales also increased significantly by 6.0 percentage points to 7.3% (FY 2022: 1.2%). The bus division is also making a comeback: in 2023, the Lion's City E series of electric buses took first place in Europe, while sales of new vehicles in the bus division (MAN and Neoplan) rose to 5,703 new registrations compared to 4,806 in 2022. MAN had reorganized its bus business and, as part of this reorganization, Barbaros Oktay assumed overall corporate responsibility for the bus division in the newly created position of "Head of Bus". The value add of VTOL has never been and will never be in transporting the affluent - its value add is still EMS, law enforcement, aerial resupply in remote mountainius areas or small islands and humanitarian efforts. When its comes to sustainable or current transportation, air transport is for the more affluent in society and the Lilium Jet is for the rich. Even at $5M its still too expensive compared to a $500k 60 seater BYD eBus or a 4/5 seater $50k Tesla, and far less efficient per seat mile.
