The destruction across the Southeast caused by Hurricane Helene is catastrophic and it will be a long time before we fully understand its toll. We are hearing from partners about the extent of the damage to trail communities across Southern Appalachia and western Florida and expect the long-term implications for these small towns and rural economies will be significant. Our hearts are with everyone who has experienced such devastating loss because of this storm. RTC has compiled resources to help those who are seeking immediate aid, ways people can help right now, and resources to support economic recovery and infrastructure rebuilding: https://lnkd.in/emmANkip.

#ClimateAction of the day: Urge Congress to get back in session and pass emergency funding for Hurricane Helene relief! Hurricane Helene has devastated communities across the southeastern United States, and Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee all face an uphill battle on the road to recovery. These areas will not be able to rebuild -- and do so with resilience in mind -- without financial support. And now Hurricane Milton is on its way and expected to hit as a powerful Category 5 storm. Even if the current fund can support relief efforts for Helene, more funding will be needed as we proceed through hurricane season. It is time for Congress to get back in session and give these communities the support they need. Urge Congress to act: https://lnkd.in/g67kEJrt #HurricaneHelene #DisasterRelief #ClimateAdvocacy #TakeClimateAction #HurricaneMilton

Hurricane Helene barreled through western North Carolina in September 2024, proving that unprecedented disasters can destroy communities, take lives and wipe out vital lifelines in a matter of hours while leaving long lasting impacts. Preparing for disasters like Hurricane Helene on “blue-sky” days, or days where no disaster is imminent or on the horizon, plays a critical role in disaster recovery and enhances resiliency in our region. THE RESPOSNE AND RECOVERY TO HURRICANE HELENE — Over the past few days, many of us have turned our thoughts and sympathies to those that are managing through the devasting effects of Hurricane Helene. IBTTA’s members in Florida, Georgia, North Carlina, and Tennessee are working tirelessly to restore and their facilities and operations, and to support larger recovery efforts with their state and local partners. In the aftermath of yet another damaging severe weather event, what more can we offer beyond our hearts and prayers for the people that have been so significantly devastated? (1) Consider contributing to an established relief organization working to provide resources and support to the response and recovery efforts. You can find some of the top relief organizations on IBTTA’s website here. (https://lnkd.in/eYg9g-g8) (2) Look into IBTTA’s Sustainability and Resilience Framework (https://lnkd.in/ey-n_zTK). This document is the foundation of the actions and initiatives IBTTA is taking to address decarbonization and infrastructure resilience. You can make a difference and become part of the solution by joining IBTTA’s Sustainability and Resilience Task Force. #IBTTA #Tolling #HurricaneRelief #Helene #Sustainability #Resilience Photo of NC's I-40 by Travis Long, "The News & Observer", Raleigh, NC

Many communities are still reeling from the devastation that Hurricane Helene brought. This morning Reuters cited that 160,000 homes and businesses are still without power following the storm. https://hubs.la/Q02SPvYf0 We continue to closely monitor the rapid progress of Hurricane #Milton as it approaches Florida. The intense storm features a large swath of high wind speeds, with impacts reaching much further than the direct path. We urge those impacted to follow local emergency management guidance, and are thinking of all of the communities, #utilities personnel, and more preparing to respond quickly with recovery efforts.

Hurricane Milton's arrival near Siesta Key, Florida as a powerful Category 4 storm serves as a stark reminder of nature's supremacy and our enduring vulnerability to its forces. With states of emergency declared across several cities, Floridians now face the challenging task of bracing for significant disruptions. In these trying times, community resilience and strategic preparedness become paramount. Businesses, residents, and local leaders must come together, leveraging technology and collective resources to tackle the challenges ahead. Those in positions of influence and leadership must also note the impact on campaign trails and daily activities, utilizing this moment to innovate ways in which engagement and communication can continue, safeguarding both democratic processes and local livelihoods. This storm's trajectory, closely following Hurricane Helene, underscores an urgent need for sustainable urban planning and robust support systems. As we navigate Milton's impact, let this serve as an inflection point in how we approach disaster readiness and community solidarity, emerging stronger and more unified. Stay safe, stay informed, and may our collective efforts turn adversity into opportunity.
