Rail Devolution to Metro Mayors. RAIL Magazine had pages devoted to the subject in the last issue. I sat on Transport for the North Board and heard from Metro Mayors about the importance of them getting more control over their local rail network. I do remember Northern responding that trains cross area and regional boundaries everywhere. How inconsiderate of them! Let's make everywhere like Headbolt Lane near Kirkby in Merseyside, where you have to change trains to complete a journey from Wigan to Liverpool. That will keep services on patch and enable simple devolution. Can someone tell me why all this is getting the air time and attention, when there are much bigger problems to solve. Maybe Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom will understand it better than someone like me? Manchester Piccadilly departures at say 11am for 1 hour on a Friday. How many of the trains terminate in Greater Manchester? 54 trains timetabled. 4 originate or terminate in Greater Manchester - the services to Hazel Grove and to Rose Hill Marple. That's it. Do the exercise at your station and then, like me, conclude that tram systems and bus networks can be rightly devolved but rail networks need to be under national control, in due course by Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT). Photo: A class 323 electric unit at the end of the line at Hadfield, Derbyshire on a local service from Manchester Piccadilly. We forget that Derbyshire has an electric railway. Mayor Claire Ward should have the same say on that service as Mayor Andy Burnham.

The renationalisation of the UK rail network is a hot topic affecting consumers and businesses in all corners of the country. With a new bill recently presented to Parliament, this vision is closer to reality. 🚆Our latest work with Rail Delivery Group reveals 52% of the British public supports renationalisation, but almost as many remain unsure or opposed. What might renationalisation really mean for passengers? 👀 Take a look at Alice's latest blog to explore the case for and against this major shift in the UK’s rail system, drawing on examples from transport systems in other markets: https://lnkd.in/eZ2AQi9K #Renationalisation #Railway #UKRail cc Thomas FOLQUÉ Tim Sander James Bland James Myring Lucy Watts Matt C. The UK’s rail regulator, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), has approved a new rail service between Swindon, Taunton, and Weston-super-Mare, to be operated by the co-operatively owned GO-OP Train Co-operative. This groundbreaking decision marks a significant step towards increased competition in the UK rail market and offers new travel options for passengers in the region.

🚆👉 Did you know that only 52% of Great Britain was in favor of the renationalisation of the rail system? If you missed it, here is an insightful article by my colleague Alice Wells, and it's a must-read for anyone interested in the debate around the renationalisation. Using consumer and market data BVA BDRC collected on the behalf of the Rail Delivery Group, the article highlights key positives and potential issues such as the tax burden, efficiency concerns, and the loss of competitive drive. 🌟 Check out my new blog: The Renationalisation of the Rail Network 🌟 The renationalisation of the UK rail network is a hot topic that’s stirring up discussions nationwide. With a new bill recently presented to Parliament, the possibility of renationalisation is becoming more tangible. 🚆 In my latest blog, I explore what this could mean for passengers and businesses alike. Our recent work with the Rail Delivery Group shows that 52% of the general public support this move, but many remain uncertain. What could this major shift mean for you? Will it bring about the positive changes many hope for, or are there challenges that could come with it? 🔍 Dive into my blog to find out! I focus on the case for and against renationalisation, looking at the potential benefits like improved value for money, better integration across services, and increased infrastructure investment. On the flip side, I also discuss the potential downsides, including the increased tax burden and the interim upheaval that could accompany such a major shift. Only time will tell how this unfolds... #renationalisation #ukrailway #raildeliverygroup #rail

Two of my favourite topics in one news story - railways and local government empowerment. Looking forward to tomorrow's English devolution white paper, and to continuing the quest to deliver the dual benefits of rail reform and devolution. https://lnkd.in/eDJe2uQD
