Thank you to Raincoast Conservation Foundation for nominating the Southern Gulf Islands Whale Sighting Network (SGIWSN) for the prestigious John Nightingale award for Ocean Engagement. We are honoured!
SWAN is a member of the Irish Sea Network (ISN), a group of 13 conservation bodies across all the Irish Sea nations. Today the ISN launched a report calling for planners in all 6 nations of the sea to work together to ensure nature is protected. 🌊
Management of the Irish Sea is complex, with each nation managing the sea in its own way. But marine wildlife doesn’t see the lines we draw on maps and the wonderful habitats and species that live in the Irish Sea are connected.
Because of this connectivity, management of the marine environment in one nation may impact wildlife beyond its borders in another.
We therefore need marine plans to be aligned, and decision makers to consider the cumulative impacts of all activities on the Irish Sea as a whole.

"Today we're celebrating International Turtle Day! 🐢🎉 These fascinating creatures have been around for millions of years, gracefully navigating our oceans and adding to the beauty of our planet. Let's take a moment to appreciate their resilience and the important role they play in our ecosystems. Did you know that turtles help maintain the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds? Let's work together to protect these amazing animals and their habitats. 🌊🐧 On this World Penguin Day, we highlight the Galápagos Penguin, the world's only northerly penguin species found exclusively in the Galápagos islands. However, these penguins are facing challenges such as declining populations due to changing ocean conditions and the presence of introduced predators.
🌎 As we commemorate World Penguin Day, let's also recognize the importance of conservation efforts to protect these amazing birds and their marine ecosystem. Global collaboration and local commitment are essential to ensuring a secure future for the Galápagos Penguins.

I just came across an eye-opening article discussing a range of topics from marine conservation to the impact of waste on our oceans. From the controversies around opening a Special Area of Conservation to the efforts of communities like Vanua Levu's Nagigi, there's so much to learn and reflect on. The article delves into the nuances of marine protected areas, the intersection of environment and human societies, and the delicate balance needed in wildlife tourism. It's a reminder that even small actions can make a big difference. What are your thoughts on these pressing marine conservation issues? https://lnkd.in/gHkeTfei

What if we did nothing?
The numbers speak for themselves: 6487 black rhino (with conservation action) versus 296 black rhino (without conservation action).
The conservation action for Black Rhino must continue to maintain and increase these numbers.
This study (detailed below) measured how close a species (the black rhino) is to being fully ecologically functional across its range and how much it has recovered thanks to conservation.
There are so many donors, conservationists, rangers, scientists, communities, academics, and more committed to these conservation actions.
What if we did nothing?
In a recent study, the African Rhino Specialist Group (AfRSG) took a look at the IUCN Green Status for the black rhino, which measures how close a species is to being fully ecologically functional across its range and how much it has recovered thanks to conservation actions. Check out our summary of their findings in our latest blog.

Today is a day to celebrate love, and if there's one thing scuba divers love, it's the ocean and the marine animals that inhabit it. 😍🐢
In our latest blog post, we talk about the importance of sea turtle conservation, the threats these animals face, and what divers can do to help conserve them.

To safeguard migrating marine turtles, it's crucial to grasp their population patterns and where they reside. For instance, young green turtles depart a Costa Rican beach, feeding near Bermuda for two decades. Upon maturity, they come back to their birthplace in Costa Rica to breed, lay eggs, and perpetuate their lifecycle.
