Here’s a new research finding that should distress my fellow social-impact communications and marketing professionals: When it comes to our communications, end users feel understood only about half the time. Twilio's new State of Nonprofit Digital Engagement Report gives us a lot to consider. But I can’t move off this finding, especially given the industry’s decades-long push to use audience and data analytics to accurately tailor content, services, and communications based on an individual’s preferences, expectations, and interests—aka personalization. This kind of personalization is no longer a nicety, but an expectation of rising generations. In the B2C space, 64% of Gen Z and 56% of millennial consumers say they’ll stop using a brand that doesn’t meet their personalization expectations. I suspect it won’t be long before that same expectation applies to nonprofits. The good news is that improvement is well within our grasp. CRM technology is available and accessible. Effective practices are well-established and understood.
