The Roadmap for U.S. Robotics has been updated every four years since it was first published in 2009, with impact on the nation's R&D pathway with each iteration. The #ERVAcommunity was pleased to co-sponsor this effort with distinguished colleagues from UC San Diego; the Computing Community Consortium; University of Pennsylvania, The University of Texas at Austin; and Arizona State University. For 2024, key considerations in the roadmap are related to the use of advances in artificial intelligence, how to address the workforce shortage, and a more explicit emphasis on sustainability. This paper shows what the new era of Robotics looks like! Robotics used to be very hard and the progress in this field was very slow. Now, UC Berkeley researchers have made significant strides in robotic control systems, demonstrating the potential for rapid advancements in real-world robotics: “We show that our model enables a full-sized humanoid to walk in San Francisco zero-shot. Our model can transfer to the real world even when trained on only 27 hours of walking data, and can generalize to commands not seen during training like walking backward. These findings suggest a promising path toward learning challenging real-world control tasks by generative modeling of sensorimotor trajectories.” The breakthrough is attributed to the decreasing cost of gathering large-scale datasets for training, the effectiveness of transformer architectures in this context, and emerging scaling laws in robotics. Meet 2024 Epistimi-US-Japan Foundation leadership participant Wakana Fujii! I work as a software engineer specializing in robotics at Sony Semiconductor Solutions, focusing on planning like route and task planning. I earned my master's degree from Waseda University, Department of Intermedia Art and Science, where I researched robots that assist with dressing for people with disabilities, combining robotics and AI. This work won the best paper award at the SII 2022, international conference.
