This University Mental Health Day, cadets in Maritime and naval colleges and institutions across the UK are invited to participate in a new survey to investigate the understanding and perception of UK seafarer medical standards amongst cadets. The research project is led by Dr Helen Devereux from Warsash Maritime School part of Solent University and Dr Lijun Tang from the University of Plymouth, who are interested in how and where cadets get their information about UK seafarer medical standards (known as ENG1s). Speaking of the research, Dr Devereux said: “We know that ENG1s are an important part of being a seafarer and it's something that, to date, has had very little attention. We would like as many cadets as possible to complete the survey as, whilst there are lots of anecdotal stories from cadets, what we really need is rigorous data on the subject.” The survey, which does not include any questions of a personal nature and will ensure participants’ anonymity, closes at 23.00, Sunday 31 March 2024. A summary of the results will be available on completion of the project. To take part, visit 👉 https://bit.ly/3Tei8Hd University Mental Health Day is an annual day to get the nation talking about student mental health and working together to make mental health a university-wide priority. At Solent, we believe that mental health is as important as physical health and encourage all our students to talk about mental health and seek support if needed. #Maritime #Cadets #ENG1 #MaritimeSurvey #MaritimeResearch #UniMentalHealthDay #WarsashMaritimeSchool #SolentUniversity #PlymUni

One of the glaring mistakes over the last thirty years in education ( and I well remember the angst of the Reagan era national report on our continued education crisis when I was a young assistant professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College) has been the false promises made to all students that they must get college degrees and become impoverished by steadily increasing tuition with no substantive guarantees of actual jobs with commensurate compensation to be able to pay off increasingly unaffordable college loan debts. Clearly the lack of skilled vocational training is not just a forgotten aspect of post high school education choices but besides being more profitable for students, and less expensive for them, who are not really interested in various esoteric academic majors, but also has a clear national security component and consequence! The following report seems to make that point.

1/3 : Title: Bridging Psychological and Physiological Realms: Military Trends and Vigilantism in Civil Society Conclusion: The interplay between physiological psychology and military trends in the emergence of vigilantism within civil societies presents complex challenges and opportunities. By understanding the psychological and physiological underpinnings of these movements, society can better address the root causes and mitigate the negative impacts while harnessing the potential benefits of the discipline, resilience, and sense of purpose that military training provides. Balancing these elements requires thoughtful policies, community engagement, and a commitment to the principles of justice and rule of law.

ICYMI: You Can Die for Your Country, But You Can't Go to a Career College In its effort to prop up failing conventional four-year colleges and universities, the U.S. Department of Education has put up mountains of red tape to deter students from #careercolleges, Bob Carey wrote last fall in RealClearPolitics. "This continued condescending paternalism limits veterans' earned benefits and will lead to fewer educational opportunities in the long run." Lessons Learned In A Hole-Filled Marine Corps Tent: My platoon was on its culminating field exercise at the end of Officer Candidate School (“OCS”). When my tent-mate and I set up our old hole-filled tent in the dark after a long, wet hike in the bone-chilling cold. At the time, my tent-mate was a prior-enlisted Candidate with a simmering aura infused with controlled aggression. He was hard to read due to his natural presence, intense demeanor, and curt personality. During training, he consistently helped me as my injuries worsened, but I was unsure whether he was motivated by pity or empathy. Unquestionably, he flourished in OCS, and candidly, I didn’t, but not for lack of trying. After haphazardly taping holes in our tent to prevent the pummeling rain from coming in, I asked him exasperatedly, “Why do you put up with me?” He immediately glared at me piercingly. The tension in the space became palpable, likely built up from the months of aches, fatigue, and anxiety. He retorted, “Because I know you would do the same for me.” His words were short but profound because I hardly knew him. I lay awake in that hole-filled tent for what felt like an eternity, and I realized… “he’s right.” At the time, I failed to understand he weighed the unconditioned and sincere assistance I gave him and others, which I trivialized. He knew I wanted my peers to thrive even when I couldn’t. He gauged me not for the condition that I “was in” but for the person that “I was.” I learned three things in that hole-filled tent: 1. Our acts have lasting impacts, regardless of how small. 2. Our acts matter, but how we make others feel matters more. 3. Duct tape can fix anything…trust me. Disclosure: I completed 99% of Marine Officer Candidate School but am not a Marine. However, I hold a profound respect for the Corps and its members.

The A-F grading system for Texas public schools is complex, but let's try to simplify it. For elementary and middle schools, the #STAAR test is the only factor that affects the school's grade. A high school grade takes the STAAR test, college, career, and military readiness, and graduation rate as factors. What metrics do you consider when evaluating a school's performance? #TexasSchools #TXEd #TXLege
