The young scientists are leaving academia because academia pays peanuts 🥜- yet the only ones who suffer from this is academics as a whole because young scientists are the only ones who are actually doing the BASIC FUNDAMENTAL BORING SCIENCE nessesary to advance our understandings of science for the wellbeing of humankind globally. I swear to you - industry folks are NOT doing any of that labor. The industry exists to bring products to commerce - that’s all they will ever do. There are stories where industry scientists ended up discovering and describing unique scientific phenomenon yet hiding it because of profit motives. A massive L for academia:
Over the past decade, there's been an unprecedented exodus of young life scientists from academia into private industry. But amid a rough biotech job market, new data show this trend is slowing (for now). My latest for STAT https://lnkd.in/g-gUkNHQ

‘How Can We Keep Scientists as Scientists!’ That’s the question I had for the #LCR (Late Career Researchers) at the British Pharmacological Society’s #Pharmacology2024 in Harrogate. As a final year #pharmacologist, I’ve had conversations with #lifescience #graduates about their experiences after completing their degrees. Many describe feeling defeated, facing countless hurdles before breaking into the industry, only to find themselves undervalued and underpaid. A significant number of these individuals have also shared that they’ve considered leaving scientific roles altogether, exploring careers in areas like business management or technology instead. As someone passionate about inspiring more young people to pursue pharmacology through my online work, this has left me wondering: what is truly being done to retain scientists in science? What measures are in place to ensure that those passionate about research and discovery feel supported, valued, and motivated to stay within the field? #ECR #LCR #Pharmacology2024 #BritishPharmacologialSociety

My thoughts on this as well, making a scientist needs proper motivation. Actually along the way after grad, realities start to set in, while diligently searching for a way into the life science sector, you then figure you need to set long term goals for your dream and live to survive first but if you're determined you'll get it eventually, not to fret. Big thanks to the British Pharmacological Society for a lot during my undergrad days. I'll share my story soon. #lifesciences #scientist #innovation

𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙈𝙮 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮 : 𝐻𝑜𝓌 𝒹𝒾𝒹 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒? Hi everyone, I’m Khadijah Sadiq Yelwa, currently a 400L medical student and also an aspiring Product Manager. I wouldn’t say there is a particular moment or reason which has led me into this field. I have just always known as a little girl that I wanted to be called a doctor(without knowing what it entailed💀). Being in med school has been one of the biggest challenges in my life, if not the biggest. It has been a very hard but rewarding journey. From organic chemistry in 100L to Anatomy and Biochemistry in my preclinicals, I’ve faced numerous challenges. There were moments of late-night studying, immense pressure, self doubt, and almost giving up. But all these experiences have taught me amazing skills like perseverance, resilience, competence and determination. 𝓐𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓪𝓵𝓵, 𝓰𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽 𝓹𝓮𝓸𝓹𝓵𝓮 𝓪𝓻𝓮 𝓷𝓸𝓽 𝓶𝓪𝓭𝓮 𝓮𝓪𝓼𝔂. I am proud of how far I’ve come and I’m so glad to be participating in the Linkedin Optimization Course for Medics 2.0 organized by Docxplorer. My goal is to use this platform to gain more visibility and opportunities in healthcare, public health and Tech, and also connect with professionals in my fields of interest who I can learn from and get mentorship from. I encourage others to join this challenge and share their journeys with us✨ #10dayslinkedinchallengebydocxplorer #publichealth #tech

If I were still a grad student looking to enter the biotech industry (any aspect of it), I would have signed up for this Fellowship program offered by No Patient Left Behind. I'm a touch biased because I'm one of the people who designed the program and teaches it. (DEADLINE: June 15. Link to apply on page below.). All virtual, 12 weeks, taught with help from Sr. Fellows from last semester's class (so that all fellows have benefit of small group discussions). Everyone stays in touch by Slack. Not just talkie talkie... we also work on hands-on projects. Our industry would be so much better run and better able to engage with the public and policymakers if we had all known the fundamentals presented in this fellowship. So if you're an executive at a company, refer your newest employees to this program (you can even level up on their own via the information on the NPLB website under LEARN). #biotech #medicine #healthcare #investing https://lnkd.in/e_VnJvBK

🌟 Inspiring Alumni Meet at The Institute of Science 🌟 Today, I had the privilege of attending an alumni meet organized by our esteemed Rajendra Choure Sir, where we were graced by Adil Sir, an expert in Clinical Research Oncology working for a leading US-based company. His journey, which began humbly with swab collection, has been nothing short of remarkable, showing us the true value of perseverance and continuous learning. Adil Sir shared invaluable insights on how to thrive in the clinical research field: 💼 Don't chase the salary, chase the learning – Early in your career, prioritize knowledge and skills over monetary gains. 🔬 Ground-level knowledge is everything – Whether it's swab collection or advanced research, never underestimate the value of hands-on experience. 🚀 Be proactive – Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you; initiate and explore new projects, even at the entry level. 🧠 Critical thinking is the key – In clinical research, as well as in microbiology, it’s important to think beyond protocols. Be smart, not just a task-oriented technician. 🌍 Understanding the real world – Clinical research isn't just about labs and theories; it’s about addressing real-world medical challenges, improving patient outcomes, and making a global impact. He also opened our eyes to the vast opportunities in microbiology and clinical research, from roles in data management, trial design, regulatory affairs, to oncology and public health. Adil Sir reminded us that it's not enough to just follow instructions; we must understand the why behind every action, bringing innovation and fresh thinking into every task. I walked away feeling empowered, understanding that thinking critically and acting strategically are essential skills, no matter the field. A huge thanks to Adil Sir for sharing your journey and inspiring us to not just look at the “next job,” but to build careers that make a difference. 🌱🔬 #AlumniMeet #ClinicalResearch #Oncology #Microbiology #CriticalThinking #GrowthMindset #Innovation #ScienceLeadership #HealthcareTransformation Dr. Homi Bhabha State University, Mumbai
