Each aircraft represents an absolutely massive support team ranging from pilots, cabin attendants, ticketing agents, IT, security, dispatchers and schedulers, maintainers, cleaners and countless other quality careers. Focusing on maintenance (I'm biased...) In the next ten years we expect to see an average of at least 13,400 job openings for A&P technicians each year. Fully certificated A&P's are seeing starting wages north of 30/hour, and experienced techs moving into management or lead positions are seeing base salaries well over 100k. It only takes 18 months to complete an A&P course. While other industries may offer higher initial pay, very few industries offer the growth that an A&P certificate and experience offer. There is no industry in the world that does not benefit from aviation. Whether it is fast shipping of time sensitive items, or carrying passengers on their way to close a deal that will keep a factory open, aviation makes it possible. The absolute fact is that every single airplane will require a certificated technician's attention nearly every day. When I first stepped into the world of aviation over 15 years ago as a flight attendant, I had no idea where this adventure would take me. Professional Contract Pilots: An ASSET to your flight department As a full-time professional contract pilot, I occasionally find myself asked to justify my daily rate. A broker recently enquired about my rate for a short trip through South America and when I told him, he responded: ‘USD or Dirhams 🤣🤣’ Yes that’s TWO laughing emojis! Rather than smash my phone in frustration, I made a quiet note to vent about it on Linkedin. Consider the costs of hiring a full time Captain on a beautiful jet like the G650: -Salary: $ 350,000.00 -Insurance and benefits package (roughly 22% of salary): $ 77,000.00 -Training costs: $ 150,000.00 (Initial amortised over 5 years, recurrent, international ops, med-air, travel, hotel, per diems on training) -Payroll taxes: $ 33,000 (based on 9.5 % matching tax on a base salary) -Electronic publications: $7,000.00 -Total: $617,000 As an owner/department manager these costs are fixed before you even turn a blade. Your pilots are also out of action for two weeks of training and at least 2 weeks of annual leave per year. Let’s assume your jet is flying 100 days a year. Your pilots are costing $6170 per duty day. Even at a very busy department flying 150 days a year that rate is still over $4000 per day and that’s assuming your pilots aren’t at training, on leave, sick or dealing with a family emergency. In this case you call in a solid, reliable contractor who has stumped up the cash and set aside the time to keep themselves current, recent, equipped, rested and swept up on the latest information pertaining to your airframe. Their day rate is a bargain and the fact that they exist is a real ASSET to the flight department… but maybe I’m a little biased 🤣🤣 Does your department use contractors to supplement your operation?

LinkedIn Post 3 2024 Part 1: Safety Issues related to the use of  “TOO” much hired staff for Aviation maintenance work. Dear Readers, I take part in a Dutch Media investigation by Jan Salden, Zembla Research Journalist about the problem with Hired Mechanics with Aviation Maintenance companies. Due to lack of experienced maintenance staff with many airlines more and more companies rely on the hiring of temporary staff to fill the gaps in their staff rosters. In the EU this is limited by law to about 50% max. This is often easily bypassed so it happens in many companies 1 or  2 B1/B2 licensed engineers work with 8-10 Unknown staff mechanics. To handle them and perform the required maintenance and still comply with the proper way of handling maintenance where, According Part 66 rules for Support staff requires that the engineers who are in the position of Support staff becomes next to impossible. Let me give you an example: the regulation Part 145 requires that the support staff, when they determine “who does what” at the beginning of shift they should determine that “when they perform their duties of verifying to ensure that the work done is according the rules to ensure the jobs is done correctly, the proper tools are being used, the adjustments etc are properly check, the right materials have been used etc. etc. It  is my experience after 42 years having worked as B1 engineer in hangers, Platform, foreign countries that an maintenace engineer "has to be able to determine if a person requested to perform a particular task is qualified to do that task. Example 1: Brake replacement where:  Wheel and Brake both have to be removed after the aircraft has been jacked up and the brake, hydraulic lines, temp plug etc are removed and replaced. This basically is not too complex for experienced mechanics and your verifying the ask could be performed, while not being there all the time, just show up at the Hydraulic pressure check and when the wheel has been reinstalled and torqued to see that all runs smoothly. Example 2: A Hydraulics power steering pack has to be replaced, and in this case, you have never done this yourself (or not recently on this particular aircraft type). To comply with verifying as support staff, that the work is done properly, having to do the double check for primary Flight Controls maintenance, you can only perform that according to the regulations by doing this work as Support staff by being present the whole time, on or eventually together with a mechanic. And then you have to contact another Engineers not involved in the task to do the double check. Now the Support staff dilemmas: See part 2.
