Effective communication is a key element of medical care; it can foster a warm interpersonal relationship, facilitate the exchange of information, and enable shared decision-making. In the context of obstetric care, it is associated with a range of positive clinical and social outcomes for mother and baby. But few studies have examined intrapartum communication in the Indian setting. Based on interviews with providers across different levels of public health facilities in two districts of Karnataka, we identified four types of communication: compassionate, factual, prescriptive, and defensive. Knowledge and power hierarchies operated differently in each type of communication, and did not necessarily serve the goals of communication in a medical interaction. Our findings point to the necessity of integrating an understanding of the ways in which social hierarchies operate in a clinical setting into respectful maternity care guidelines, medical curricula, training programmes, and interventions. #communicationhealth #communication #medicalcommunications #health #universalhealthcare #publichealth #India #rcesdh #phfi #healthequity #researchforchange #empoweringcommunities #healthforall

🚨 Medical Negligence and Systemic Failures in Neonatal Care 🚨 The tragic death of a newborn in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, exposes glaring systemic gaps in India's healthcare system. Despite policies advocating universal health coverage, structural inadequacies, corruption, and resource shortages continue to cost lives. Key insights from NHRC Case No. 2137/24/7/2024: ⚕️ Infrastructure Failures: Lack of pediatric ventilators and incubators violates Ministry of Health guidelines. 🏥 Corruption: Allegations of bribes deepen mistrust and marginalize vulnerable families. ⚖️ Human Rights Violations: The case underscores the state's failure to uphold the Right to Life (Article 21). NHRC Recommendations: ✔️ ₹2,00,000 compensation to the family. ✔️ Mandated upgrades for neonatal facilities. ✔️ Accountability frameworks to combat corruption. Healthcare isn’t a privilege; it’s a fundamental human right. Systemic reforms are essential to prevent such tragedies and ensure equitable, quality care for all. 🌐 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gNZTpP6h #MedicalNegligence #NeonatalCare #HumanRights #HealthForAll

This study investigates the information-seeking behaviour of patients in outpatient clinics in India and its impact on in-clinic satisfaction. It identifies key factors influencing patients' behaviour, such as the communication style of doctors, consultation time, and socio-demographic characteristics. The findings reveal that patients who actively seek information tend to be more satisfied with their healthcare experience than non-information seekers. Contrary to stereotypes, male patients were found to be less likely to seek information than female patients. The study emphasizes the importance of effective communication skills in enhancing patient satisfaction and suggests that training in these skills should be integrated into medical education. https://lnkd.in/grWU3sbj

🏥 Today, India has one doctor for every 834 people, compared with 2.4 doctors for every 1,000 people in the United States. This brings up the simple yet radical idea: If patients are most comforted by their loved ones, why not involve them in the medical process and see how that affects recovery? Audacious Project, Noora Health, has introduced its "care companion” program to ensure that medical information is properly communicated to patients and their families. This also has benefits of: - common post-surgery complications being reduced - lower acts of violence by frustrated family members against health care workers - reducing anxiety in the wards Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eyha4RhV #AudaciousProject

A study in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health last year found that only 8% of Australian parents went straight to a health website they already knew & trusted when looking for health information about their child. Everyone else just Googled it. How is it that, after all these years of digital being the go-to for health information, no website has become the trusted place Aussies turn to? It blows my mind that no one has managed to own this space yet. What a massive opportunity for a publisher or pharma brand to step up & become the trusted health hub. Who’s going to do it? #HealthMarketing #DigitalHealth #Trust #PatientEngagement

Today we’ve published our latest report on Rota Gaps in Paediatric Units. This follows a survey of tier 1 and tier 2 rotas earlier this year, which are a key subset of the paediatric workforce – also known as trainees or resident doctors. Overarching findings show that: - There is an average 20% rota gap across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with higher gaps in Tier 2 except for Northern Ireland. - Combined General/Neonatal rotas had the highest gaps at 23.4%. - Combined rotas (General Paediatrics/Neonatal and General Paediatrics/Specialty) were most heavily impacted, suggesting District General Hospitals are more affected. Placing the right people in the right place at the right time within a framework of workforce modelling and projection is crucially important for safe, effective service delivery as well as the wellbeing of clinicians. These statistics are deeply concerning and we need real action with a child health workforce strategy. See our report and full list of recommendations: https://lnkd.in/eRgJdUfp
