We’re proud to share that our ‘Net Zero Terrace’ initiative in collaboration with Electricity North West, Centre for Energy Equality, and Rossendale Valley Energy, won the prestigious ‘Innovation Award’ at the Utility Week Awards on Tuesday evening. The ’Net Zero Terrace’ initiative combines an ambient loop system for heat pumps with community energy and smart energy management via a virtual microgrid. The community-led approach will see smart-energy solutions adopted across streets throughout the country, helping to optimise energy bills while addressing significant demand on the electricity network, thanks to Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund. Phil Proctor, Technical Director at Buro Happold, said: “By looking at how we can use a smart energy approach, we’ve developed a flexible, community-led solution that means we can decarbonise whole neighbourhoods. The solution unlocks stranded communities in terraced streets, yet can be applied anywhere. This has never been achieved before in the UK.” We are also addressing non-technical barriers to create a commercial, standardised, replicable, and scalable model for 'energy communities' across the UK, thanks to a grant from UKRI. Building Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Without energy efficiency retrofitting of existing buildings, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to reach the global carbon neutrality, decarbonization, or Net Zero targets set for 2050. In honor of Earth Day, we’d like to share one client’s sustainability efforts— the Village of Plain and the Green Technology Training and Enterprise Center. This initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and empowering the community through green technology training. Despite a tight deadline of just five months, Green TTEC was able to deliver on its sustainability goals and we rose to the challenge. From insulated panels to a photovoltaic generation system, which directly converts the sun's rays into electricity, geothermal HVAC, and natural ventilation features, every aspect of this building was meticulously designed with sustainability in mind. 🌍 One of the key features is the geothermal HVAC system with natural ventilation features. This technology harnesses the earth's natural temperature to heat and cool the building, significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Geothermal HVAC systems utilize underground pipes to circulate fluid, absorbing heat from the ground in winter and releasing heat in summer, providing efficient and environmentally friendly climate control year-round. This green building achieved a LEED Gold certification by meeting prerequisites that address carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health, and indoor environmental quality. The Village of Plain created a space where current and future generations can learn, grow, and contribute to a greener future. 🌱 This project was recognized as "Best Green Built" and "Best Small Project" by In Business magazine.
