Imagine this as the home you grow old in. Recently, our team in South Africa had to rush to repair a dilapidated shed at our homeless shelter for an 80-year-old woman with nowhere else to go. Sadly, this has become more common. Increasingly, we see senior citizens arriving at our shelter, with nothing to show for a lifetime of hard work. There are many reasons why people end up at our door—poor choices, substance abuse, or life simply taking a hard turn. But more and more, we see seniors who have worked their entire lives yet find themselves without a plan or the means to support themselves as the cost of living continues to rise. Unable to afford their homes or cover daily expenses, they have nowhere left to turn. Swiss4Afrika’s shelter is often overwhelmed, but we do everything we can not to turn seniors away. These individuals, who have already given so much, deserve dignity in their later years. However, we urgently need more homes to provide them with safe and comfortable shelter. It costs 3,000 CHF or $3,500 USD to build a modest one-bedroom home at our center for these elderly individuals. If you are able, even a small contribution can make a world of difference and significantly improve their quality of life. Please consider donating and giving these seniors the refuge and care they deserve. Together, we can provide them with a safe place to call home in their final years. Every little bit helps. Across Africa, countless congregations gather in the open air or in makeshift structures, exposed to the elements and the uncertainties of nature. The lack of physical church buildings isn’t just a challenge in terms of comfort but a barrier to the growth and stability of these faith communities. Recognizing this, PACT Missionaries has embarked on a transformative journey to construct preacher houses and church buildings, offering these congregations a permanent home to worship, gather, and grow. With an ambitious goal to assist 100 congregations over the next 36 months, requiring an estimated USD$75,000 per congregation, the task is monumental but not insurmountable. The heart of this campaign lies in the belief that every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to turning these visions into reality. This cause goes beyond constructing buildings; it’s about laying the foundations for communities to thrive spiritually, socially, and economically. By providing a stable and secure place of worship, we’re not just erecting structures; we’re helping to build stronger communities, foster resilience, and inspire hope. Join us in this noble mission. Your support can help transform the landscape of faith across Africa, brick by brick. Together, we can create lasting sanctuaries that will serve generations to come. Donate now and be a cornerstone in this monumental undertaking. #pactchurchbuilding #faithinaction #buildhope #communitysupport #spiritualgrowth #africanchurches #donatenow #transformation #infrastructuredevelopment #churchconstruction #makeadifference #faithfoundations #supportafrica #charitywork #giveback #nonprofitorganization

Today I learned that only 3.3% of donations in Canada support Indigenous charities. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to reflect on the intergenerational impacts of nearly a century of systemic abuse inflicted on Indigenous Peoples, including through the Canadian residential school system. Systemic discrimination, harmful government policies, and racism have created historic and modern injustices and inequalities — including long-term drinking water advisories, unequal access to healthcare and education, mental health crises for young people, and economic inequality. If you're looking to take action to address this, there are many organizations to support: CanadaHelps has an Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Fund, which includes more than 50 Indigenous-led charities from across Canada whose focus ranges from social services to arts and culture. There's also a movement where you can donate One Day's Pay, which is guided by The Circle on Philanthropy, a national Indigenous-led organization that works to transform the philanthropic sector to redistribute wealth, activate wisdom and strengthen organizational infrastructure for the purpose of Indigenous peoples, organizations, communities and nations. You can also amplify Indigenous voices, educate yourself and others, and advocate for systemic change. One Day's Pay, CanadaHelps, Wanda Brascoupe, Orange Shirt Society, Official Orange Shirt Society

🌠 Something to ponder! Charities in Canada acknowledge the strong necessity to diversify their donor base in order to thrive. Often overlooked yet an incredibly impactful group is the immigrant population in Canada. Engaging immigrants as donors is not just a strategic move, but a vital one for the sustainability and growth of our organizations and many have moved in this direction I'm happy to say. Below are some hard-hitting facts from the Gov't of Canada highlighting just how generous newcomers are: ➡ More than 1 in 4 people employed in the social assistance sector were born outside of Canada, as were nearly 1 in 5 working in social advocacy, civic, social and giving-related organizations. ➡ Between 2006 and 2016 there was a 58% increase in the number of foreign-born social and community service workers. ➡ Newcomers are also giving back. On average, immigrants donate more to charity than Canadian-born citizens. ➡ When asked why they make financial donations, immigrants said the top 3 reasons were: compassion towards people in need; personally believing in the cause of the charity; and to make a contribution to the community. ➡ Hundreds of thousands of immigrants volunteer their time to charitable causes across the country each year. ➡ In fact, nearly 40% of immigrants aged 15 and older are volunteers. On average, they volunteer 162 hours each year. Here's to continued efforts to think more inclusively for the sake of charities and nonprofits who need our support. #ConnectingGreatPeopleWithGreatCauses #MakingitMeaningful https://lnkd.in/e6iAfsj9

As today is World International Charity Day, we honor the vital role of philanthropy in alleviating the worst effects of humanitarian crises. The UN recognizes that charity builds resilient societies, yet today, nearly half of the global population lives in poverty. Philanthropy is good, and we proudly contribute, but to make a lasting difference, we need more than charity—we need systemic change. The trillions required to end poverty are concentrated in the hands of a few. At Millionaires for Humanity, we advocate for a wealth tax on the world’s richest, including ourselves. Philanthropy is good, but wealth taxes are better. Let’s champion change that benefits everyone. #InternationalDayOfCharity #WealthTax #Philanthropy #wealthinequality

Peace begins with a smile - Mother Teresa 🙏🏻 Mother Teresa is a controversial public figure. Nevertheless, she helped countless individuals until her last breath. It is important to underline her legacy, which lives on through many other people. The International Day of Charity, observed annually on September 5, was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. Its main objective is to encourage charitable efforts by individuals, organizations, and communities around the world, fostering generosity, and highlighting the importance of philanthropy in alleviating human suffering, poverty, and humanitarian crises. Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, which is why this date was chosen to honor her legacy. 🙏🏻 The day emphasizes how charity helps to promote solidarity, reduce inequalities, and provide solutions to global challenges, such as poverty, hunger, and access to education and healthcare. This day encourages people worldwide to contribute in their personal capacity, whether by donating, volunteering, or raising awareness about pressing issues. Even small acts of kindness are emphasized as being powerful tools in creating positive change. Various organizations, including the UN, governments, NGOs, and private sectors, participate in events to promote and highlight charitable causes. 🙏🏻 It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving - Mother Teresa 🙏🏻 Artwork from Google 🙏🏻 #newseries #thejarofthoughts #motherteresa #internationaldayofcharity #solidarity #compassion #marishasblog

Cancel your weekend plans – our newest report in now online and available for download!! After 18 months of research we are very proud to launch ‘The Bequest Report: Reshaping Australia by passing on more than assets’ - https://lnkd.in/e8G5m5yf Why is this research on Bequests relevant now? Because this period of wealth transition is a once in a generation opportunity to unlock significant pools of capital, which have accumulated in many Australian households, for social impact. Some key observations to whet your appetite: · We estimate total inheritances will be approximately $150 billion in 2024 · Only 1% of this amount will go to for-purpose organisations (compared to 4.4% in the USA and 3.7% in UK). · In Australia, bequests currently make up approx. 0.6% of total income for charities (compared to 1.8% in the US and a significant 4.5%in the UK) · Over the next 20 years, we estimate a massive $5.4 trillion will move across generations. The size of the prize is obvious: if we can lift of bequest percentage from 1% to 4-5%, then we can increase the flow of capital by tens of billions of dollars to help address some of the many pressing social and environmental needs. Our aspiration with this report is to provide high quality insight to help everyone across the social impact ecosystem to develop and implement more effective strategies. We look forward to working closely with our for-purpose and private clients to help them turn these insights into strategies that help them achieve their ambitions. My gratitude to John McLeod for dedicating himself to another piece of market leading research - and to Kim Venter for her contribution. History has many examples of bequests that have transformed the lives of individuals and communities, but very little is known about bequests. Until now. Today we release the JBWere Bequest Report: Reshaping Australia by passing on more than assets, authored by John McLeod, Senior Research Consultant, Family Advisory and Philanthropic Services, JBWere Australia. This report explores the true scale of this opportunity in Australia, including insights such as: - Only $1.3 billion of the staggering $150 billion that will be transferred through inheritances will be allocated to charities. - The cause areas which attract most of the bequests. - The extent to which some major charities increasingly rely on bequests as a crucial funding source. Our aspiration is that this report provides valuable insight to all our clients – individuals, families, corporations, and for-purpose organisations. It is through quality research, tailored advice, and access to our network that we fulfil our purpose to ‘give clients the confidence to do what matters’. The next report from the illustrious @John McLeod at JBWere 'The Bequest Report' has been released 👇👇 . A must read and rather timely after the Philanthropy Australia conference this week. Looking back on my notes from the launch series..... I'd noted the change, via ABS data updates that the intergenerational wealth transfer had increased from $3.4 to $5.4 trillion, yet only 1% of this is directed toward charities through bequests. My notes from the event also underscored John stressing the importance of aligning organisational goals with bequestors' motivations. Addressing the "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM) factor is crucial to unlock this potential. How we answer the question, "What will be done with the bequest?" is pivotal for future impact. I can't wait to get into the detail. Thanks to the team JBWere for continuing to share impactful insights like this for the sector. Further to my other post, having read the full paper, I can confidently say it's a must-read for our sector. Another great report by JBWere 's John Mcleod and Kim Venter. It provides invaluable insights that can transform our approach to bequest strategies. A clear call to action is for us to look at our bequest strategies in light of this report. Discuss the findings with your board and share this critical information with families and donors who will find it enlightening. The diagram in the report, which challenges conventional notions of wealth, is particularly striking and thought-provoking. For us at Wesley Research Institute whilst we have graciously benefitted from gifts in Wills, our journey is only beginning and full of potential. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enhance your understanding and strategies.
