The best sales people don’t ‘sell’.
- They ask questions
- Discover problems
- Find solutions.
And the most successful people I’ve met in sales are usually the most humble.

Entry level jobs are no longer entry level..
My lovely Fiancée is looking for an entry level sales role & it is completely mind boggling what these companies are asking for.
“Consistently exceeding sales KPIs” can’t always be achieved by seasoned sales veterans.
Requirements like these are making it impossible for bright, creative young people to land their first sales role.
No wonder the SDR role is going downhill.
You’re hiring SDRs with previous experience (that want an AE role) with potentially low motivation.
Rather than someone dying to get into the industry and is prepared to do anything to make an impact?!
Seems silly to me.
Rant over..
If anyone has any real entry level roles (industry agnostic) drop me a message.
Revenue Growth | Customer Success | Direct Sales| Professional Services | Integrated Business Planning | SaaS | Known for increasing revenue - FY18: 78.5%, FY19: 108.8%, FY20: 86%, FY21: 57.2%, FY22: 71%, FY24:18%
We’re on the hunt for 4 Sales Reps and 2 Sales Directors, which means I’ve had the pleasure (insert slight eye roll) of reviewing dozens and dozens of applications. If you’re applying for a sales role—here or anywhere—here’s my 2 cents on how to stand out and make a hiring manager’s life a little easier:
1️⃣ Be clear about what you sold
The company name on your resume isn’t enough. Was it SaaS B2B sales? Equipment? Recruiting services? Don’t make me Google it. Tell me what you sold and how it connects to the role you’re applying for.
2️⃣ Show me the numbers
How many quarters/years in a row did you hit target? What quota did you carry? If you missed quota, be transparent—tell me why. (There are valid reasons, and it shows self-awareness.)
3️⃣ Location matters.
Where have you sold? Are you familiar with rural markets? Regional expertise can make a big difference depending on the role.
4️⃣ Industry expertise matters too.
Have you worked in industries we’re targeting? If you bring niche knowledge, let me know—it’s a selling point!
5️⃣ Know your sales focus.
Are you a pro at enterprise sales with long cycles, or do you thrive in the faster-paced mid-market world? Different sales cycles, different skills.
6️⃣ Explain gaps in experience.
If you don’t have the experience listed in the posting, don’t just hope I’ll overlook it. Tell me why you’re applying. Some of the best people I’ve hired didn’t have the “perfect” background, but they made a great case for why they were the right fit.
🛑 Don’t make me guess or search for information. If I’m squinting at your resume trying to piece things together, you’re already at a disadvantage.
Hiring is a two-way street. Help me get excited about you—and make it easy to see why you’d crush it in the role!
Good luck out there! 🚀

Following up on my point last week about applying context when your experience doesn’t match a job description directly:
This candidate listed 9 years of project management accomplishments that don’t align with the postings (excerpt below). The issue isn’t their lack of “traditional” sales experience but that they didn’t frame their achievements to show how they apply to the posted roles.
Tweaking the accomplishments to align to the job expectations might look something like this:
“Managed a project pipeline of 50 enterprise companies, delivering $XX in revenue over X years.”
“Imported $XXM in specialty equipment, managing key stakeholders to achieve [specific outcomes].”
“Scaled the team from X to Y staff, generating X% additional revenue.”
A list of accomplishments without context won’t get you past the ATS, HR, or hiring manager—even if you’re a great fit. Always tie your experience to the role.
Here's the application EXAMPLE (anonymized from the actual application)
2015–2024
Company Name, Location, Project Manager & Operations Lead
- Supported installation of technical equipment and automation systems for large enterprises.
- Managed projects spanning machinery, automation, and quality control systems.
- Applied advanced troubleshooting skills to resolve challenges.
- Coordinated the import of specialized manufacturing equipment from international suppliers.
- Designed and implemented systems to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.
- Supervised and supported a team of service technicians.
- Establish and grow a business entity to support the corporation’s customers, both internal and external
And here's what the posting seeks in experience https://lnkd.in/gu3HueqE
New Business Development:
- Identify, prospect, and qualify new business opportunities within hospitals, health systems, and managed service providers in the Northeast region.
- Build and maintain a robust sales pipeline to achieve and exceed revenue targets.
- Develop and execute strategic outbound sales campaigns to generate new leads and opportunities.
Relationship Management:
- Build strong, long-term relationships with key decision-makers, including C-suite executives, financial leaders, and IT stakeholders.
- Act as a trusted advisor, understanding client needs and presenting tailored ERP solutions that deliver measurable value.
Sales Execution:
- Manage the end-to-end sales cycle, from initial outreach to contract negotiation and closing.
- Deliver compelling presentations and product demonstrations to prospective clients.
- Work with cross-functional teams to execute a complex sales cycle.
Market Insights:
- Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and competitive dynamics within the healthcare sector.
- Provide feedback to the organization to inform product development and sales strategies.
