Opioid use disorder is one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time, yet it’s often misunderstood. A common misconception is that individuals struggling with opioid addiction simply lack willpower. But in reality, the science of addiction shows us that it's not about "free will"—it's about how the brain is rewired by substance use. Check out this article in Psychology Today titled "When Free Will Fails People With Opioid Use Disorders" by Dr. Mark Gold with contributions from Scott Teitelbaum and RANE Senior Advisor Michael Lesser M.D. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eU6UgdRd

The term “relapse” carries a lot of weight and has many layers. It represents a significant challenge for individuals battling substance use disorder (SUD). It’s also more than just a setback — it’s a complex issue intertwined with physiological, psychological and societal factors. Unlike other chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma, SUD relapse carries a heavier stigma, hindering individuals from seeking the support they need. This stigma, coupled with societal pressures, creates barriers to treatment and perpetuates the cycle of addiction. It’s time for a societal shift in our perception of SUD. To support this shift, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, in collaboration with the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers and partnering contributors, presents the Demystifying Relapse series. https://lnkd.in/eDtc_Ade
