However, did you know that many recovery homes in residential neighborhoods face challenges due to outdated zoning policies? Individuals in recovery are covered under the protected class of disability, and may request reasonable accommodations that are needed to use and enjoy their housing. An example of this could include a recovery home that needs a change in zoning policy to locate a home for unrelated individuals in recovery in a residential neighborhood. Denying this request is not just a policy issue—it’s discriminatory. Local zoning boards must recognize that recovery homes are essential for community health and well-being.
