#Day5 of the #30DayMapChallenge: A journey Map 🌟 The Great Escape of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1666) 🌟 This map portrays one of the most extraordinary episodes in Indian history: the daring escape of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from Agra Fort in 1666. Invited by Emperor Aurangzeb, Shivaji Maharaj was insulted at court and placed under house arrest. Feigning illness, he cleverly orchestrated his escape by hiding in fruit baskets sent out as “offerings.” This marked the beginning of a six-week #journey spanning over 1,500 kilometers, as Shivaji Maharaj evaded Mughal forces and returned to Raigad. 📍 Key Milestones in the Journey: #Agra Fort: The starting point of the escape, where Shivaji outwitted the Mughal guards. #Mathura: Disguised as a holy man, he found his first refuge here. Allahabad (Yamuna River): Shivaji skillfully bypassed Mughal-controlled areas along the river. #Bundelkhand (Chitrakoot, Orchha): Supported by sympathetic allies and chieftains. Nagpur and Chandrapur: Entered Maratha territories while navigating dense forests and rugged terrains. #Raigad Fort: The final destination, where Shivaji received a hero’s welcome. This journey reflects not just Shivaji's #brilliance in strategy and #planning but also his resilience in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. Each stop on the route tells a story of courage, alliances, and #tactical genius. 🗺️ Mapping History: Through this map, I aim to honor Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy while blending history with modern cartography. It’s a tribute to one of the greatest leaders who reshaped Indian history. #GIS #ShivajiMaharaj #TheGreatEscape #IndianHistory #MappingLegends #ArcGISPro #HistoricalMapping #Leadership #30DayMapChallenge

The next publication in our Supernatural Cities special issue, authored by Debaruan Sarkar, is "of Treasures and Earthquakes: The Material Ghosts of New Town, West Bengal". You can view the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e-EBMJsP "The article builds on two ethnographic vignettes, the fear of earthquakes that the construction of tall buildings evokes and a story of treasures under a massive housing estate, to argue the presence of material ghosts in New Town, West Bengal, a planned and developing town east of Kolkata. Through these two ethnographic accounts, the article foregrounds the weird and the eerie present in the city in plain sight and mundane articulations. The supernatural city, the article argues, need not be teeming with traditional ghosts. Rather, the supernatural in the city can be found in imaginations, articulations and relationalities of the material. The presence of the immaterial across time and space is evoked through the material relationalities of the city. The city, in the article, is presented to be resolutely enmeshed with a range of immaterial imaginaries." #materiality #urban #ghosts #spectrality #NewTown #WestBengal

In the sacred geography of #India, few cities carry the weight of cultural, spiritual, and historical significance as deeply as Ayodhya, the "Adipuri"—the primordial city of Vishnu. This ancient city is revered as the first among the Saptapuri, the seven sacred cities of India believed to offer moksha, or liberation from the cycle of life and death. Rooted in the grand epic of the Ramayana, #Ayodhya is etched into the consciousness of not only Indian civilisation but also global memory as the birthplace of Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the personification of righteousness. In my recent book 'Ayodhya: A Walk through the Living Heritage', I delve into the city's mystique, which has captivated poets, seers, historians, and devotees for millennia. Its cultural narratives span multiple epochs, each adding layers to its rich tapestry of mythology, theology, and political history. While popular imagination may associate Ayodhya primarily with Ram’s story—the prince who becomes the archetype of moral integrity—it is also the cradle of an illustrious lineage of kings, sages, and mystics who contributed to its enduring reputation. In tracing Ayodhya’s spiritual and historical significance, one uncovers the interplay of religion, mythology, architecture, and governance, revealing a city that serves as both a temporal and metaphysical axis in the Indian subcontinent. 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐚 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞, has a rich history and is surrounded by mystery, particularly the 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬. These secret passageways are believed to have connected the fort to important locations such as Delhi's Red Fort, providing a safe means of passage during wars or for escape. Built by the Mughals, it is said that these tunnels extended for miles, allowing discreet movement between strategic sites. However, the truth behind this legend is uncertain. While some known underground structures within Agra Fort, like subterranean chambers and short tunnels, there is no solid evidence supporting an extensive network reaching Delhi. The enduring fascination with these tunnels may be due to a combination of historical fact, speculation, and Mughal-era myths, adding an intriguing layer to the fort's rich heritage. #greattourindia #hiddentunnels #agrafort #agra #tajmahal #facts #history #mystery #hiddenchamber #tunnelhistory #UNESCO #historicalmonuments #worldheritage
