True or False? 🌍 I've set myself the challenge of doing one post a week on a CSR topic in a true-or-false format! Hope you will enjoy the concept! Then, True or False? "In Reunion Island, the export of recycled waste is the second most important one in terms of volume after sugar." . . . . . True! ✅ In 2021, 95% of the recycled waste in Reunion Island is exported. Substantial issues with capacity and technology persist, which limits the island's ability to handle its own plastic waste effectively. Most of this waste, particularly cardboard and paper, is re-exported to Europe. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, for example from bulky waste or illegal dumping, are sent to smelters in India. Ongoing initiatives to improve the situation: The RUN'EVA project in the south of the island will transform some of these "materials" into energy, and recycle what can be recycled locally. The foundation stone for this energy recovery unit was laid in Saint-Pierre. Two large storage pits will be able to accommodate up to 230,000 tonnes of waste, which will then be processed at the center using three different processes. Conventional recycling, organic methanization of biodegradable waste and energy recovery by incineration. The construction should be finished by 2025. Please find below two articles about the initiative (it's in French but I have resume the info in my post). https://lnkd.in/ezEYQ6cB https://lnkd.in/e2i6B64U Réunion La 1ère France Télévisions #waste #Reunionisland #exports #trueorfalse

With a recycling rate of over 70%, Sardinia is leading the way in waste management. The region ranks second after Veneto, with an annual average of 74.64%. The costs and environmental impact of incineration and thermal recovery have led public authorities to prioritize reducing waste production per person. In one year, each Italian citizen generated 493.6 kg of waste, compared to 462.5 kg in Sardinia. The introduction of the bonus/malus mechanism in 2004 has played a significant role in encouraging selective collection. However, it has also led to increases in waste disposal taxes on the island. 340 euros per year. This is the average amount paid by a Sardinian family for waste, which is above the national average of 320 euros, a 3.5% increase compared to 2022. In Cagliari, the most expensive town, the tax is 410 euros, while Oristano, the least expensive, is 296 euros. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eg87zsmx Building on this 'success', Sardinia aims to become a leading authority in waste management in the Mediterranean region. __ 👋 Emanuele Bompan ∙ M. #virginplasticfantastic #plasticphoenix #virginplasticgoodforenvironment Fake environmental fights produce fake solutions. What people expects ? Each action produce equal reactions. Totally fake assumptions promoted from dogmatic activist , corrupted gouvernements and parasite gouvernementales (like the IPCC , GIEC for french readers) and non gouvernementales organisations. (NGO) about human origin CO2 emissions (this suddenly killing Gaz) , or plastics pollutions or meat consumption, or even allowing only 4 flights in a life spam ....and many others dogma, fruit of a deep selfishness and/or schizofrenia, are simply stimulating the survival instincts or opposants and therefore producing similar but opposite fake solutions. Until better , concrete solutions to virgin plastics , in a real world, won't be found, better to deal with. Just 3 virgin plastics application, among the many, in automotive/mobility (lighter vehicules , lighter aeroplanes , lighter boats , lights train and so on) , building (better insulations or lighter pipes), food (longer duration amd less waste) are the most beneficial solutions also for the environment, in a real world where human and waste exists. That's all folks and good luck!! https://lnkd.in/eWt9TEFW.radiofrance.fr%2Ffranceinter%2Fpodcasts%2Fla-terre-au-carre%2Fla-terre-au-carre-du-jeudi-07-novembre-2024-2544059&utm_campaign=aga&utm_source=agsadl1%2Csh%2Fx%2Fgs%2Fm2%2F4

🚨 Did you know that textile containers may not always contain textiles only? Groupe Terre recently raised concerns about this, as 16% of what they collect in their textile containers is household and green waste... ❌ This issue has led to a staggering €1 million annually in handling and disposal costs, impacting the financial viability of the social enterprise. As Europe's largest network of social enterprises active in the circular economy, RREUSE calls for future Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes to cover the costs associated with textile waste collection, including: 💸 The cost of residual waste after sorting. 📢 Comprehensive awareness-raising communication efforts. #socialandcircular #secondhandfirst #textiles #textilewaste https://lnkd.in/eHjDDzi8

With a giant fossil dinosaur made of plastic waste, Greenpeace activists informed passers by about the necessity to drastically reduce plastic production if we truly want to put an end to its pollution. The action took place in Bern, Switzerland, less than a month before the next round of negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty, in South Korea. Switzerland has an important role to play and should use all its diplomatic skills and influence to make sure the treaty fixes a global target to reduce plastic production, stops single use plastic and facilitates a just transition to a zero-waste, low carbon reuse economy. Plastic stays in the environment during hundreds of years and never really disappears: it just degrades into smaller and smaller parts, microplastics and nanoplastics. In addition, it leaches dangerous chemicals, posing a threat to biodiversity and to human health. The banner ‘Our heritage for eternity?’ next to the dinosaur questioned whether a planet drowning in plastic is all we would leave to the next generations. An ambitious and binding Global Plastics Treaty is a historic chance to avoid this and to put an end to plastic pollution. #breakfreefromplastic #beatplasticpollution #plasticstreaty #ZeroWaste #ReuseAndRefill Link: https://lnkd.in/d6KiBJXK Federal Office for the Environment FOEN | Greenpeace Switzerland

Facing the scourge of plastic pollution that plagues the South Kivu province, a breath of hope is blowing over Bukavu. A group of young entrepreneurs, united within the Cleanliness organization, has developed an ingenious solution: transforming plastic waste into pavers. This Monday, July 29th, in the commune of Ibandi, they presented their pilot project, an initiative that could revolutionize waste management in the region. "We based our project on our environmental context, where plastic pollution reigns, especially in our province," emphasizes Jean-Marc Bagalwa, the project initiator. Aware of the urgency to act, the members of Cleanliness have developed a process to give a second life to plastic bottles, sachets, and other packaging that litter the streets of Bukavu. Let's support this inspiring initiative! By investing in plastic recycling, we contribute to a cleaner environment and a stronger local economy. ♻️ #SupportCleanliness #InvestInOurPlanet #innovation #sustainability #plasticpollution #circulareconomy #Africa #DRC #Bukavu #cleancities #socialenterprise #youth #entrepreneurship https://lnkd.in/eKVt8qgj

🆕 We are thrilled to share a press release from our coordinator AFYREN 📰 🌍 The AFTER-BIOCHEM project is all about pushing for an environmental-friendly and sustainable chemistry by producing fine chemicals from agricultural by-products, namely sugarbeet wastes and molasses, valuing waste ♻️ 🤝 AFYREN is making another step in the same direction with its new partnership with SUEZ. Both announced in a press release that they want to build a value chain to recycle and value organic wastes, a kind of materials Suez manages as their traditional activities. On the long term, the objective is to recycle organic wastes into chemicals or energy (in a methanation process) 🍃 Read the press release 👉 https://lnkd.in/eeFfNxar #AFTERBIOCHEM #EUproject #Collaboration #Sustainable #Chemistry Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU)
[NEWS] 🤝 We are delighted to announce the acceleration of our efforts to create a new path for organic waste recovery ♻️This work is done in collaboration with SUEZ a leading player in circular solutions for water and waste management, and is in line with AFYREN’s core strategy of transforming organic waste streams into resources with real value 🎯The objective is to develop a new, complementary organic waste recovery process, as the current re-organization of biowaste sorting and collection systems will facilitate access to these flows and increase the amount of organic waste available to be processed. 🇪🇺 The work is part of the European AFTER-BIOCHEM project, with support from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and is fully in line with European policy on these subjects. Our Managing Director, R&D Director and AFYREN co-founder Jérémy Pessiot⚡ explains : “SUEZ is a long-standing partner in the AFTER-BIOCHEM consortium, and I'm delighted to be able to move forward on this project, which is particularly close to my heart, as it is fully aligned with AFYREN’s DNA: innovate to turn waste into a valuable resource." https://lnkd.in/eJa9d7wK #Innovation #CircularEconomy #Bioeconomy

Recycling your e-waste is now easier than ever ♻️ E-waste is discarded electronic devices that contain valuable materials like metals and hazardous materials like mercury and lead. E-waste is growing globally. Proper recycling recovers resources and reduces pollution, giving electronics a second life rather than ending up in landfills. Thus, The Sustainable City (TSC) in Dubai has introduced a new e-waste collection and management station in collaboration with EFATE. It is a 24-hour drop-off station that provides residents and the public with a free and efficient way to dispose of electronic waste. E-waste brought to the station will be collected by EFATE and taken to a recycling facility where useful components will be reused and other parts will be crushed safely. EFATE also offers free pick-up for large items. Moreover, working electronics will be donated to charity after sorting or else they will try to refurbish items for donation. The initiative aims to promote responsible e-waste recycling as currently only 20% of the 50 million tonnes discarded globally each year is recycled properly. #ewaste #ewasterecycling #ewastemanagement #takeaction #sdg12
