Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce and Natcast.org, the operator of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), announced the expected location for the first CHIPS for America research and development (R&D) flagship facility. The CHIPS for America Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Accelerator, an NSTC facility (EUV Accelerator), is expected to operate within NY CREATES’ Albany NanoTech Complex in Albany, New York, supported by a proposed federal investment of an estimated $825 million. The EUV Accelerator will focus on advancing state of the art EUV technology and the R&D that relies on it. This proposed facility will bring together NSTC members from across the ecosystem to accelerate semiconductor R&D and innovation by providing NSTC members access to technologies, capabilities, and critical resources. Successful evaluation of four groundbreaking semiconductor pilot line proposals by the Chips Joint Undertaking , with negotiations underway for final agreements with top-tier consortia, promising significant advancements for the semiconductor industry. Consortia led by imec, CEA-Leti, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft/FMD, and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) are set to receive approximately 3.4 billion EUR in funding from the Horizon Europe and Digital Europe Programme, and national contributions, indicating a substantial investment in Europe's technological infrastructure. According to Stephan Guttowski, for the time being, the U.S. and Asia are more determined than Europe, leaving us in a weaker position in the global semiconductor industry. Nevertheless, Europe does have a lot of strengths in terms of heterogeneous integration, and other niche technologies. "We have to build on these strengths and further develop our microelectronics ecosystem so we can be a partner on the same level as Asia and the U.S," he says. On December 17, 2024, the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD) announced that the pilot line for advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration for electronic components and systems (APECS) has started operations. The main objective is to help researchers develop and test new heterogeneous integration methods, in particular emerging chiplet technologies. Europe’s semiconductor sector calls for immediate ‘Chips Act 2.0’: https://lnkd.in/eZW44_H4 The European Union aims to produce 20% of the world's chips by 2030 — but are its measures enough? European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA), the association representing Europe’s semiconductor industry, has called for an “immediate Chips Act 2.0” — if the bloc is to maintain momentum in the global race for technological leadership. The group comprises major chipmakers such as NXP Semiconductors and Infineon Technologies as well as research organisations including imec and Fraunhofer IPA. The EU’s Chips Act entered into force in September 2023.
