All you need is a game-changer. My first job in the automotive business was in National City, California (a short drive to the Mexican border.) We were in a lousy location because it was too far for most shoppers to drive. (So we thought). Out of 9 Nissan dealers in San Diego County, We were number 9 in volume. The new company that purchased the store a year before had made no headway, and then this happened: Mike Cronin, a new GM from Texas, was hired to run the store. The day he started, I came in late and was informed I would be fired if I continued to be late.  (He eventually promoted me after I got my act together). His approach? Clear vision, decisive action, and a team aligned towards success He didn't bring a crew and kept most department managers unless they didn't buy into his vision. . A case in point was the UC manager who was asked, "How many used cars do you think we can sell here"? The manager said he did not think we could sell more than 50-75 a month.  He was fired the next day. Within four years, we were the #1 volume Nissan Dealer in the USA, and we held that position for three years in a row. We sold half of all new Nissans sold in San Diego County, and we sold 150-200 used cars a month. Another group of potential candidates might be CPAs in public practice who are nearing a forced retirement age or want to escape the grind of public accounting. A few days ago, I visited my dealership to address a minor issue with my car. Typically, these visits are an opportunity to catch up on new launches and reconnect with the sales rep who sold me the car. However, she has since moved on to new professional challenges, and this time, the difference in customer service was stark. Despite spending two hours exploring their new cars, I received little attention, even from the commercial director. Only the service agent, who meticulously handled my car, made a positive impression. This experience highlighted how critical people are to a brand's reputation. When key team members leave, the organization's standards can quickly decline. My recent visit left me with a sense of mediocrity rather than the excellence I once expected from this luxury brand. Ultimately, it’s the people who uphold the values and reputation of a brand, and without them, even the best products’ goodwill can be reduced to nothing. “Have you ever been in the car business and actually sold cars?”,  I was asked. “Besides the fact I was number 2 in America for Cadillac sales, and became a partner at a dealership, not at all", I said, tongue in cheek.  My career in automotive has been a little unconventional. I started in the car business in 1988 and never left. How do I stay motivated?  I’ve found working at a dealership is the best job in the world when done right. But it can be the hardest job in the world when done wrong. After all of my experience in the car business, when I launched Career Changers USA in 2012, I was able to identify a massive need. Dealers needed highly motivated sales associates, and those employees needed expert training in order to succeed. That's what I do. The road to success in a crowded auto market like Australia is often bumpy. We're witnessing a period of significant change in almost every aspect of the business that's adding even more potential potholes. Cadillac's entry is not without risk and that risk is, I believe, compounded by its choice of a direct-to-consumer retail model. Aussie new car dealers are, in the main, very good at what they do. Fixed price models, omni-channel and hybrid approaches and other variations that tweak the traditional OEM-dealer-consumer path to market are yet to prove their worth in this market. 🔝 #October’s sales figures are in – and first off, I’d like to thank all of our customers, new and long-standing, for choosing Volkswagen. The brand took the number one spot in the BEV market of #Norway. It topped the markets in the #UK and #Italy. And it recorded a 26 per cent increase in #Germany.   This is a really strong #performance. We sold 44,000 new cars in Germany last month alone. This equates to a market share of 18.9 per cent. We also owned 18.7 per cent of Germany’s #BEV sales in October. The #global market is more competitive than ever, and achieving these results is no easy task. The challenge is very real. But these figures are proof that we are moving in the right direction. And that our enticing offers and exciting products are winning over new customers.    Over the coming months you can be assured that we’ll be seizing every opportunity to increase sales further.   I’d like to #thank every member of the #Sales team, including our superb #retail network, for their hard work and commitment.
