One argument against passive, quant investing: “Passive investors have no opinion about value. They’re going to assume everybody else has done the work.” That is, according to Greenlight Capital founder David Einhorn, who continued: “Quants base their trades on short-term price moves rather than a company’s actual worth” … like … “What is the price going to be in 15 minutes?” Comments like these seem to be increasingly common on the back of almost $150 billion of client drawdowns at equity long-short funds over the past five years. (https://lnkd.in/gZ7ukzhq) The challenge with active investing is you have to be able stick with a trade in the hopes that your thesis will materialize when the stars are aligned. You often can’t do that if you have to constantly worry about withdrawals, high watermarks and performance fees.
