Greetings! Universal’s TWISTERS touched down this weekend with a bracing $80.5M in ticket sales. After five weeks led by animated family films DESPICABLE ME 4 and INSIDE OUT 2, the summer action genre stepped back into its traditional leading role. DM4 and IO2 were also solid contributors, leading to a weekend gross of $147.2M for all titles. TWISTERS’ surprising success took some of the edge off what would otherwise have been a difficult comparison to last year, when the dual openings of BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER powered the weekend box office to $311M, its best total of the year. Exhibitors will enjoy another thrill next weekend when Marvel’s long-anticipated DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE arrives. The R-Rated superhero matchup combines the forces of two beloved characters, the wisecracking DEADPOOL played by Ryan Reynolds and the nimble slasher WOLVERINE played by Hugh Jackman. Its opening weekend may be over twice that of TWISTERS’ this weekend. For more results, check out Dick Walsh’s Weekend Review. You will also enjoy reading Alonso Duralde’s review of TWISTERS, published in partnership with The Film Verdict. In this week’s Don’t Kill the Messenger podcast, host Kevin Goetz enjoys a conversation with DeVon Franklin, known for his work on inspirational films such as Breakthrough, Miracles from Heaven, and Flamin' Hot, as well as the BET series Kingdom Business. #twisters #universalpictures #glenpowell #despicableme4 #illuminationentertainment #insideout2 #disney #pixar #devonfranklin #kevingoetz #dontkillthemessenger #boxoffice #boxofficepreview #screendollars

Greetings Movie Lovers! Even though Memorial Day is still four weeks away, the blockbusters are coming early this summer with a major new release every weekend in May. The popcorn will be overflowing for THE FALL GUY on 5/3, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES on 5/10, IF on 5/17 and both FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA and GARFIELD on 5/24. Exhibitors are anticipating a significant upswing in ticket sales and foot traffic. This weekend, Amazon MGM’s romantic sports drama CHALLENGERS opened to lead all films with a 3-day total of $15M. Fun fact: that makes it the top opening for a tennis-themed sports movie of all time. It’s also a significant accomplishment for its star Zendaya, whose considerable successes to this point have come in movies with mega budgets, copious special effects and large ensemble casts of A-listers. The total for all movies this weekend was a so-so $64.5M, considerably lower than the same weekend last year which produced $100.2M, led by THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE’s $40.8M in its fourth weekend at the top of the box office. For more insights, check out the Weekend Review from our box office expert Dick Walsh. This week’s Don’t Kill the Messenger podcast is a re-issue of one of our most popular episodes over the past 18 months. Host Kevin Goetz welcomes Jim Gianopulos, former studio head of 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, to discuss his guiding principles for producing successful movies and the importance of making bold decisions and taking calculated risks. #challengersmovie #zendaya #lucaguadagninon #amazonmgm #unsunghero #kingdomstory #thefallguy #kingdomplanetoftheapes #furiosamadmax #garfieldmovie #boxoffice #screendollars #jimgianopulos #kevingoetz #dontkillthemessenger

🎥 Mufasa: The Lion King – Can It Roar This Christmas? 🦁 As we enter the holiday season, the box office is heating up with a lineup of highly anticipated films. Among them, Mufasa: The Lion King is set to make a strong debut. But will it create the same magic as its predecessor? Here are some key highlights: 🔸 Projected Box Office US weekend opening: $47-$52M Global debut: $177-$192M, with $130M expected from international markets. 🔸 Competitive Landscape Facing stiff competition from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the already successful Moana 2. 🔸 Strengths Better critical reviews than the 2019 Lion King (59% vs. 51% on Rotten Tomatoes). Regional appeal in markets like India, boosted by voice talents such as Shah Rukh Khan and Mahesh Babu. 🔸 Challenges Mixed reviews labeling it as a "cash-in" might slow momentum. Unlikely to match the 2019 film's record-breaking $1.66B total. Despite the challenges, Mufasa: The Lion King holds strong potential to capture audience attention, especially during the festive season when families flock to theaters. 💡 What are your thoughts? Can Mufasa roar loud enough to claim its throne in a crowded holiday lineup?
