Denis Villeneuve's movies will always have more than their fair share of haters Because Denis makes movies that are heavy with subtext and symbolism, and that will always fly over many people's heads They are difficult art. We used to have a space for difficult art. The idea of a novel that you would read over many years and slowly grow to understand was more common Villeneuve makes that kind of movie. They're high cinema. Which is exceptionally rare in the era of the Disney corporate entertainment complex But it can help to have a key to unlock some of difficult art's deeper mysteries Blade Runner 2049 is that rarest of things...a sequel to a masterpiece that matches the original. It's a movie that keeps growing in reputation over time. Do you have to be consciously aware that it's a journey through the Jungian archetypes to "get" BR 2049? No. But it can help open up the movie's beauty https://lnkd.in/giXfbEzy

The Blade Runner remake was a stunningly crafted film, visually breathtaking and layered with depth. It explores not only a dark, futuristic vision but also profound existential themes and timely reflections on our society’s trajectory. This portrayal feels like a warning—a glimpse into a possible, perhaps probable, reality we should be wary of. The film's exploration of transhumanism and artificial intelligence reveals the potential for these advancements to spiral beyond our control, transforming humanity into something unrecognizable, devoid of the essence that makes us human. Alarming echoes of this future can already be seen around us, as technology increasingly encroaches on personal agency and empathy. The film brings to mind the works of Ray Kurzweil, who foresaw a similar trajectory driven by entities like Google, envisioning an inevitable fusion of humans and technology. But unlike Kurzweil’s view, which leans towards an embrace of this path, Blade Runner raises essential questions about what we stand to lose. It offers a compelling moment for self-reflection on the place of technology in our lives, urging us to balance its use with a commitment to our humanity. Only by prioritizing the human spirit above all else can we harness technology as a tool, not as a destiny. Amen to that! Here’s the trailer: https://lnkd.in/gfYRPvid

#throwbackthursday This week 's Throwback Thursday takes us back just a couple of years in the back catalogue of our new Head of CG, Aron Makkai to a phantasmagorical cowboy v alien story in the shape of Hollywood movie, Nope. Aron's insights: "Not that long ago, whilst working for MPC Character Lab, I had the pleasure of working on Jordan Peele's Nope. "VFX creatures made of flesh and bone, with or without costumes have been featured in films from early Ray Harryhausen to the latest Avatar installation. Jean Jacket (an alien creature) on Nope was so off-the-scale different that all the departments had to reach outside the toolbox to execute the award-winning concept design. "I had the honour to be trusted to do the look dev for Jean Jacket. "Normally skin and other fleshy surfaces are done by subsurface scattering. This gives an easy to control and realistic skin. But Jean Jacket, when folded out, was so translucent and thin in parts, a far more complex shader leaning into volume rendering and multi-scatter glass functions within Renderman was developed. This enabled the creature to be able to fold from its solid-looking "disk" state to its folded-out position, where parts are thin and transparent while other parts around the middle remain thick and solid looking. "Outside look dev, the execution relied heavily on rigging. Anil Onlem's contribution to the rigging warrants an exception to my self-imposed, no one mentioned no one forgotten, policy. "As it gets progressively harder to give the audience what they've never seen before, brave design decisions and a can-do attitude combined to make this a creature that is just that. Unique. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this awesome team effort." #tbt #throwbackthursday #offline #online #vfx #visualeffects #postproduction anil onlem https://lnkd.in/enMj2YeV

The Squid Star Fighter Flyby was a personal project I undertook to enhance my compositing skills in Nuke. All aspects were created in Blender the space ship, planets, asteroids, and the starry background. The scene was composited in Nuke and brought through to DaVinci Resolve for the final edit. https://lnkd.in/gBcjBNg8 #VFX #Compositing #Nuke #ILM #CGI #Blender #davinciresolve #Film #Cinema #cinematics
