E-fuels startup Aether Fuels is raising $34.3 million, according to an SEC filing. The company has already secured $30.4 million of this round. Aether Fuels focuses on producing fuel for aviation and maritime #shipping using carbon dioxide and other waste carbon streams. This funding boost comes after the #startup previously raised $8.5 million via convertible notes in late 2023. Aether Fuels was spun out of Xora Innovation, an early-stage deep-#tech incubator run by Temasek. Since its inception, the #company has been #working to refine its #technology, which can use carbon from various waste streams, including industrial pollution, methane from landfills, and farm waste. Not much is publicly known about their exact process, but a patent application filed in January suggests they are exploring a method that involves gasifying solid waste, blending it with natural gas, and transforming the mix into liquid fuel while capturing any waste carbon dioxide. In February, Aether Fuels announced a partnership with GTI Energy to access a gas-to-liquid #program. The aviation and maritime industries are looking to decarbonize, and bio-derived sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-fuels are emerging as potential solutions. However, these efforts are still in the early stages, with SAF currently making up less than 0.1% of total fuel use, indicating significant growth potential for companies like Aether Fuels.
