Information Technology and Innovation Foundation does a ton of work at the intersection of federal innovation strategies and implementation at the state level, informing key initiatives like the national Tech Hubs strategy. They just released their State and Regional Energy Innovation Index today, and there's lots of great stuff in there. Overall, in 2021 (gotta love those data lags), #Michigan ranked #9 in its energy innovation efforts, up four places from 2016. We've got room for improvement in many areas, but I was pleased to see relatively strong rankings in the following individual areas: #2 in clean energy transportation #2 in advanced energy materials #12 in water energy #13 in bioenergy #15 in energy storage At the regional level, looking at the tech areas, and considering the top 10 per category, #AnnArbor ranked #3 and #Midland #9 in energy storage. #Detroit/Wayne/Warren ranked #8 in clean energy transportation, and #Niles ranked #10 for grid tech. Notably, Niles, MI ranked highest among our state's MSAs for all areas of focus (#92 overall). This was just before Ann Arbor, which ranked #93. #TraverseCity ranked #99. Ann Arbor seemed to perform relatively well (again, ranking better than 65) across the greatest number of tech areas. In exploring each of the tech areas, they considered the following in making their rankings: knowledge development and diffusion, #entrepreneurial experimentation, supply chain and market formation, and social legitimation and international collaboration. Their full methodology is provided in the report: https://lnkd.in/gpEw3aKR Kudos David M. Hart for this amazing and helpful work!

Battery storage projects are a new gold-rush, and, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) attracted more investment that any other energy sector in 2023. But, the financing of projects has some significant complexity. Speaking to Infrastructure Investor, NARDAC’s Dr Tom Harries discusses some of the less obvious routes to optimal battery energy insurance that investors may be missing out on. Click below to read more on how early engagement on site design can be crucial to giving insurers confidence that thermal runaway risks have been considered, and mitigated.
