🎤 🎙 Mastering the Mic: Insider Tips by Eimear.ie I had a maths teacher in secondary school who constantly used the phrase “rudaí bunúsacha" (basic things) when he was trying to explain how we could avoid making the same mistakes all the time. I still hear his words in my mind sometimes and they can be perfectly applied to mic technique. Over my years of sitting in the radio studio, broadcasting live in different scenarios and listening to countless hours of live radio, I’ve heard it all. Sometimes even the pros forget about mic technique if they’re out of their normal studio environment and they hold the mic at awkward angles or move their heads away from the mic. Here's some tips that might help you the next time you’re speaking into a microphone. Be Studio Savvy: * Leaning back is a natural instinct, but resist the urge. Aim for a comfortable "not-quite-touching" distance. You'll be surprised how many voices go off-mic on local radio simply because they haven't adjusted their chair. * Maintaining eye contact with a presenter in a studio can be tricky without going off mic depending on the layout. While you don't want to be rigid, resist excessive head movement. Remember: staying put keeps your voice clear. Stage Presence: * Don't Be Shy, Adjust the Mic. It happens to the best of us: mics get left pointed skyward or sideways. Before you launch into your talk, take a quick breath and adjust the mic to point directly at you. Trust us, the audience will appreciate the clear sound. Taking it Outside: * Hold On Tight. When holding a mic during an outside broadcast, be mindful of mic drift. Your hand might naturally lower it over time. Keep it comfortably close (about a fingertip away). #mictechnique #miccontrol #outsidebroadcasts #liveradio #publicspeaking #communications #goodsound #mediatraining

If you are on stage holding a handled microphone be aware of how you hold it. It also matters how far from your mouth and how loud you speak. If you haven't taken a public speaking class and even if you did you probably weren't told to speak to the person in the back of the room and if you were told this than your professor is awesome. Even when you speak into a microphone the same rule applies. Speak to the person in the back of the room and your audio engineer wont have to provide you with any feedback( pun intended)
