Great news for this amazing student accommodation we have worked on for a number of years! Putting students wellbeing at the forefront of the design. DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT AT CARLTON HILL The Carlton Hill project is located adjacent to the Leeds inner city ring road sitting between the city centre and the University of Leeds main campus. It has been a student accommodation scheme since 2003, when a four storey shared townhouse scheme was designed by HALLIDAY CLARK ARCHITECTS for Pickard Properties, a well established Leeds based student development company, managed by Unipol Student Homes. The scheme has proved to be extremely popular, providing 253 student bedrooms to Leeds Beckett University and Leeds Arts University students whose campuses are within 3-minute walk from the site. Whilst popular, trends in student accommodation have shifted over the years with demand for en suite bedroom accommodation and fewer shared bedrooms and facilities fuelling a more space hungry marketplace. To avoid large capital spends, many universities have outsourced accommodation into the private sector proving in lieu an underwrite or nominations agreement as security to the developer to enable external funding to be obtained. Carlton Hill was not immune to this pressure and although the accommodation was fully let and in excellent condition, having been regularly updated and constantly maintained by Unipol, with a 25 year lease renewal fast approaching there became an opportunity to assess current demands for an increase demand in modern en suite accommodation. This demand was particularly focussed on undergraduate accommodation for UK based University of Leeds students in contrast to the propensity of studio apartment developments being constructed for the overseas student market, which carry a dramatic increase in monthly rental charges. The decision was taken initially to explore the use of adjoining land, not within the developer’s ownership to expand the existing development to a scheme of circa 500 bed spaces but due to a wish not to engage in the development by the adjoining landowner, the decision was taken to explore the demolition and full-scale redevelopment of the site to create a brand new undergraduate cluster flat scheme creating circa 600 bed spaces. This presented a fantastic opportunity for Halliday Clark to consider a scheme from scratch that had the wellbeing of students at its heart with every design decision from layout to paint colours based upon a desire to support students and visitor’s wellbeing. Since joining Saint-Gobain Interior Solutions, I’ve been fortunate to continue my career-long (and lifelong) passion for inclusion, equity, diversity, and belonging. Recently, I’ve had the privilege of delivering workshops that foster inclusivity and connection across our teams, as part of the Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland Together As One initiative. Tonight, I attended a public lecture by Professor Pam Alldred at Nottingham Trent University on posthumanism — a fascinating theory that challenges traditional human-centered perspectives, viewing us as part of a broader network that includes technology, animals, and the environment. This perspective really struck me and got me thinking about how the working world might expand our DEIB approach. Posthumanism offers a unique opportunity to broaden sustainability further. How could our approach to inclusion evolve if we saw it as part of an interconnected system? For instance, could we find ways to reinforce our commitment to both social and environmental responsibility, or consider the impact of technology, like AI in hiring, through this expanded lens? I’m proud to be part of a company already so committed to sustainability and inclusion by building better for people and the planet, and I’m excited to continue considering the systems we create — technological, social, and environmental — as we explore these ideas further. When was the last time you took a deep dive into the roll-out of U.N. Sustainable Development Goals to neighbourhoods across Madrid? I'm very happy our Sustainable Diversity and Inclusion Practitioner Program in Siena is full and am looking forward to leading it alongside Maura Di Mauro and Joanna Sell! 🌟 DEI laws and regulations are hotly debated topics, particularly in the US right now. There are also many discussions about how consciously and effectively organizations are implementing sustainability initiatives. Even with these debates, the importance of mindset and (self)leadership is undeniable. DEI and sustainability efforts are both deeply human. I'm convinced that such efforts require conscious, collaborative, and compassionate leadership—what I call the 3CL principle. 🤝🌿 👉 Conscious Leadership: We must be aware of our personal stories, our biases and how they influence how we are, how we communicate and how we act. 👉Collaborative Leadership: It involves developing relationships with others. This means engaging with others, valuing their unique perspectives, and leveraging these perspectives in co-creating inclusive teams. 👉Compassionate Leadership: It also means showing empathy, understanding, and genuine care for both people and the planet. I can't wait to deepen my own knowledge and skills in these areas by engaging with my co-trainers and learning together with our participants. Funded projects on #workingclass #heritage Congratulations Historic England. I think this funded scheme is brilliant and something we should see more of from funders. In many places this is heritage hiding in plain sight and at risk of being lost. In the words of Galileo: “I notice that [some] go to the universities in order to become doctors or philosophers or anything, so long as it is a title, and that many go in for those professions who are utterly unfit for them, while others who would be very competent are prevented by business or their daily cares, which keep them away from letters.” In my experience, if you see the world as it was, you are celebrated. If you see the world as it is, you are ignored; but if you see the world as it can be, you are vilified! So, as commencement approaches, I look at the list of graduates for our baccalaureate and masters students and I couldn’t be prouder; as I truly believe that they see the world as it can be; and we do need more environmental science superheroes! We at Unity Environmental University proudly provide opportunity for the latter, and continue to do our best to work with regulators, industry, and accreditors to find more ways to make our curriculum relevant, affordable, and flexible in order to facilitate more access. We will never be these institutions that are proud to announce the number of students we denied, but instead we reflect on why we aren’t able to provide increased access and support within our means to give hopeful students more equitable opportunities to try.
