During our READJUST Consortium Meeting in Tampere, we had the chance to participate to two super interesting visits that are strictly connected to the main topics of our research project: the #Green and #Digital transition, also called #TwinTransition !   💡Visit to VTT transport sector: thanks to the amazing research team members who showed some of their current main projects, we learned more about remote operations and autonomous driving solutions. 🚘   💡 Visit to Nina Wessberg's farm: we gained practical insights into how digital solutions can support the agricultural sector in using its resources efficiently and with more optimal results. These include, for instance: GPS tracking, digital fertiliser documentation, and assisted-driving machinery. 🚜   Technology is transforming our lives and READJUST strives to ensure that the benefits of the twin transition are shared by all, without excluding anyone. In #Germany, an ambitious #project is underway to develop #autonomous passenger transport #vehicles called Monocab, designed to utilize inactive #railway lines for #transportation, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply. This project is being undertaken by three #German universities with support from the European Union. The primary goal of Monocab is to provide #publictransport to sparsely populated areas that currently lack sufficient #transport #infrastructure. The concept of Monocab involves using small cabins designed to accommodate four or six passengers. These cabins are equipped with #battery packs and can travel on a single #rail thanks to built-in gyroscopes that ensure #stability. This #technical #solution allows for bidirectional movement on a single railway line, significantly saving space and resources. At the terminal stations of the route, special devices are provided to transfer the cabins to an adjacent rail so they can return in the opposite direction. Such a system greatly simplifies #logistics and minimizes downtime. The Monocab project emerged as a response to the challenges associated with ensuring transport accessibility in sparsely populated areas of Germany. In these regions, regular bus routes and other forms of public transport are often absent due to low profitability. Using existing but unused railway tracks for Monocab effectively addresses this issue, offering a #sustainable and economically viable means of transportation for local residents. The #innovation of Monocab lies not only in the use of gyroscopes for balancing on a single rail but also in the overall concept of autonomous movement. The absence of the need for drivers and the possibility of remote control make the system even more attractive in terms of operational #costs and #safety. Additionally, the use of #electric batteries instead of traditional #energy sources makes Monocab an environmentally friendly mode of transport, which is particularly important in the context of modern trends towards reducing #carbonfootprints and combating #climate change. Thus, the Monocab project represents a promising solution for the transport system of the future, combining technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and economic #efficiency. If the project is successfully implemented, it could become a model for other regions and countries facing similar issues of transport accessibility in sparsely populated areas.

A VTT-led project will improve public transport by creating new services and vehicle technologies that focus on passenger needs! 🔍🚌 🚍 The EU-funded project OptiPEx is responding to two trends: more people choosing public transport to reduce pollution and the move towards self-driving vehicles. The project will use advanced technology to make public transport safer, more comfortable, and more user-friendly. 🚍 “Our co-creation process, coupled with scenario-building techniques, will give us valuable insights into passenger needs and preferences and policy implications and trade-offs associated with different decisions. These insights in combination with advanced perception technologies and artificial intelligence solutions will serve as the main drivers of the OptiPEx developments,” explains VTT’s Johanna Kallio. 🚍 The project will test its solutions with real passengers, including those with special needs, in Finland, Austria and Germany.
