We just passed 40 employees that all live here in southern Indiana. Here is what I learned from hiring over 50 employees in the last 5 Years: 1. Encourage conflict! Yes, this is surprisingly my number one tip. After reading five dysfunctions it helped me realize the importance of constructive conflict! A healthy organization cannot live without it 2. Have some sort of operating system like EOS. This has been a game changer 3. Spend the time to actively listen. Nothing worse than an employee that doesn't feel heard. 4. Make sure you communicate your vision, and you hire off of values. 5. Higher slow, fire fast. If somebody is not happy, it will spread like a cancer. most of the time it's because they're just not the right person for that role. 6. Positive people and negative people are both infectious. Try to pull in positive attitudes as much as possible. 7. Watch your overhead. People are your biggest assets and biggest expense. It is too easy to over hire. Make sure you have a healthy ratio of gross profit to overhead. Would love to know what ratio you consider healthy. I think anything better than one to three is good.

It's that time of year again, when promotions and tenure decisions are made across universities and if you get on social media, you'll see all the wonderful posts full of pride and joy celebrating these career milestones. What's not commonly discussed especially on social media are painful career setbacks. So that's what I want to do today. I want to repost an article I wrote for Harvard Business Review that appeared in my LinkedIn feed this morning. If you are going through a setback at work, know that you aren't alone. A big storm is necessary to clear a big enough path for all the blessings coming your way. I know this may be hard to feel and believe if you are in the midst of dealing with a painful career setback but please read my article. I hope it helps you in some small way. You don’t have to face a career setback alone. You may not want to immediately share disappointing news with anyone, but when the time is right for you, know that there are people who will listen with compassion. The only person who has the power to define our worth is ourselves. Remember this and you'll come back stronger than ever and you'll find your happy place. For me, that happy place turned out to be Northwestern University an institution that had previously only lived in my dreams. My dream of being a professor at Northwestern is now my reality. Never give up on yourself. #YouWillBeOK #YouGotThis Northwestern University Medill School #Northwestern #Academia #HigherEducation #Professors #Academic #Promotion #Career #Failure #Setback #HarvardBusinessReview
You've just been denied the promotion you had been wanting for two years. How do you regroup and grow after experiencing this setback?

As a native South Carolinian, these challenges are gut wrenching and are a result of long standing inequities embedded into systems. The solutions lie in first acknowledging how we how got here. I believe addressing the issues come within and outside of the systems. We have to have leaders that aren’t afraid to push against status quo and willing to do the policy work to help drive change. Grassroots community organizing is important too, proximity to the people and the issues lie some of the best solutions along with the work needed to bring others forward. This organizing also is mechanism for holding leaders accountable and a vehicle for advocacy. The big solutions are a collective response. When we look at examples of big change the pillars were strong leaders, checked egos, shared vision, clear goals, continuous improvement, data informed practices, celebrating wins and patience. Lasting change takes time, however, if we chip away at the icebergs together, we can stay committed to the long haul.
HEADLINE: I think we are falling behind.... I'm a proud South Carolinian (#GOGAMECOCKS 🐔 🤙🏾 ) who was born and raised here. When I'm comfortable, I tend to drop the 'g' on the end (drivin' instead of driving) and my vowels are loooong ( 😂 ). I say all this to say, I love my state, and my love is always accompanied with accountability. So I must ask... how do we create more opportunities for SOUTH CAROLINIANS? Because the data isn't encouraging right now... 1. We have a *SEVERE* workforce shortage with 43 available workers for every 100 open jobs. 2. We have a labor force participation rate of 57 - below the national average. 3. Our bachelor's degree attainment rate is 32.6% - below the national average. 4. South Carolina has a median household income that is 44th in the nation. 5. Seventy-Nine percent of jobs require some type of postsecondary education or training. 6. Only 35% of the adults in this state have an associate’s degree or higher. 7. There are 487,205 citizens with some college and no credential. That number grows by over 15,000 people per year costing the state nearly 70 Million in sunk costs, ANNUALLY. Most states have *some* of these issues. We have *most* of them. Here's your challenge: What can we do about it -- individually and collectively?
