Dr. Pedro Urriola from the University of Minnesota explored how housing systems for mother pigs affect piglet survival rates. Why does this matter? Optimizing sow housing systems can significantly improve piglet survival and overall farm productivity. Conducting this type of research is essential to enhance housing systems, ensuring better welfare for both sows and their piglets. Ten changes for the city of Decatur to make in the next 12 months - With next week’s arrival of a new City Manager, there is an opportunity for change over the coming months. Below are 10 changes that city government can implement in one year’s time. Please share your thoughts on how the city can make positive improvements within the next year. 1) Make changes to the city’s animal welfare ordinance that provides further protection to outdoor pets during extreme weather conditions. 2) Renovate the former Wee Folks building and bring a much-needed childcare center to the urban core thereby reducing a major barrier to filling jobs. 3) Modify the utility tax loophole such that Decatur residents will see tax relief from their utility bills. 4) Discuss ways to reduce the record number of alarm calls to the Fire Department. Is now the time to institute a paramedicine program? 5) Develop a plan and work with utility companies so that the Oakley Sediment Basin and the farmland the city owns in DeWitt County can be converted to solar farms. 6) Improve public safety and promote economic development by demolishing no less than 200 delipidated properties in a one-year period. 7) Create redevelopment agreements for the Central TIF (which will be voted on at the May 6 city council meeting) that provide direct benefits to the residents of the neighborhoods within the TIF. 8) Take actions that result in a significant decline in the amount of sediment and nutrients entering Lake Decatur. 9) Collaborate more with Decatur Public Schools to assist in their success. DPS is scantly mentioned in the council's strategic priorities, yet their success is essential to the city's future. 10) Examine why people are leaving Decatur. The city has suffered decades long population decline. Why are we, and what issues are unique to Decatur that the city can address? #decatur #decaturcitycouncil #maconcounty #localgovernment

This Code sets the minimum guidelines that farmers are expected to follow, impacting the welfare of over 1 million sheep each year. Your insights are vital to this process. Submit your top three concerns about sheep welfare to help shape better practices. Focus areas could include improving shelter, pain management, weaning, and enhancing overall living conditions. Remember, the Code only covers on-farm issues; issues related to transport or other areas are not considered. Answers must be polite, less than 14 words, and written in your own words. Wetlands are an essential water management resource and a healthy local biodiversity. Protect what we have, rebuild what has been damaged and lastly (if done properly) introduce them in areas that would benefit from them.

Indoor cage-free layer systems have been shown to improve bird welfare, but with increased bird activity comes decreased air quality. Sanjay Shah, PhD, and a team of scientists at North Carolina State University, wanted to see if an electrostatic precipitator could help clear the air. On April 27, 1935 Congress passed Public Law 74-46, in which it recognized that "the wastage of soil and moisture resources on farm, grazing, and forest lands . . . is a menace to the national welfare,". Nearly 90 years later we are still talking about the wastage of soil and water quality. Today, we still see the effects across the landscape. #soil #RegenerativeAgriculture #SoilConservation
