In today's fast-paced world, Quiessence is often a luxury. We have to deliberately plan it into our busy schedules or, if we are more disciplined about it, we seek it in daily meditation practices or walks in nature. What is it that makes us feel the need to be constantly in motion - producing, achieving, earning, bettering ourselves, wanting more? Where does this restless energy come from? What is an antidote to our chattering minds? Quiessence is available to us all, at all times. The most common form of practicing Quiessence is through sleep, a daily pattern that brings our bodies and minds into a state of dormancy and allows us to survive and even thrive when awake. Other than that, how much do you consciously make an effort to bring Quiessence into the cycles and patterns of your life? One way to explore Quiessence is through the lens of living systems. Most of us know, whether consciously or subconsciously, that nature exists in an endless flow of cycles and rhythms, and that all living things follow patterns of birth, growth, decay, and death. If you think about the seasons, especially if you live in a temperate part of the world, you’ll notice phase changes in the energy that correlates to the different seasons. There are lessons in seasons. Spring (birth) embodies the fits and spurts of high energy that surge through nature as life breaks through and emerges from Winter. Summer embodies a sustained high frequency energy needed for growth, diversity, trial and error. Autumn embodies a pulling back, a ripening, a harvesting and celebration of the gifts of Summer, a letting go and a recycling or composting of what no longer serves life. Winter embodies a drawing in and down into the roots, a sustained period of energy conservation and an inner healing that is needed to prepare for the whip crack energy of Spring. From Dread to Glad in Two Minutes Here is one thing I never want to forget: I am endlessly lucky to exist. Some days, though, the alluring hypnosis of run-run-run rhythm carries me away, and I become mildly discombobulated and irritated. Here is a 2-minute formula to become centered and oriented to living in gratitude, wonder, creativity, and joy. 1) List FIVE things that you currently notice with your senses and that bring you PLEASURE: - Birds singing - Cold orange juice in a tall glass - Warm sunshine on my cheekbones - Smell of lavender from the garden - My bright yellow notebook 2) Recall FIVE small victories that you can CELEBRATE right now: - Went on a field trip with my son's 3rd grade - A 5-month project for a client - finished today! - Took the doggie for a run this morning - Fixed the curtains - Scheduled 2 meditation workshops in the next 3 weeks 3) FIVE little or big things that you are GRATEFUL for right now: - I can work from my deck - Soup - Pool opens tomorrow - My kids - My job is to help people experience deep inner tranquility and get in touch with the heartfulness and Soulfulness of life.
