How to be intentional about creating a sense of #belonging for every young person is often at the 💜 of our work with districts in designing systems that are #learnercentered and #future ready. Off the cuff, it can seem simple - just make sure they all feel good about being here. Truth is, though, that belonging doesn't just happen when we have herald #relationships as important. Instead, true belonging happens when we wed the importance of relationships with being INTENTIONAL about ensuring that every young person experiences a sense of belonging. Should language teachers get extra pay? In my opinion: Absolutely. Here’s why: 1. They undergo additional specialized training. 2. There’s a high demand for highly skilled language educators. 3. Their work is crucial - they safeguard heritage languages while supporting Multilingual Learners in both language acquisition and literacy. Super excited to share my most recent article published in International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism: "Integrating translanguaging into formative assessment: experiences from a Chinese immersion context." Through teacher-researcher collaboration, this paper explores how a Chinese immersion teacher designed and implemented formative #assessment, integrating them into the #translanguaging instruction design cycle. The results indicate that the teacher and students utilized various communicative resources to assess and demonstrate knowledge. The teacher skillfully incorporated the gradual release model in assessments, facilitating students' content and language development. Students reported positive experiences with the assessments, applying unit concepts, developing confidence, improving Chinese proficiency, and acquiring an appreciation for other languages.
