Another type of space sharing existed in Europe in the Middle Ages, where a big house used to be subdivided into smaller sets of rooms for use. But all these were personal suites within a house or a building. The concept of communal living in completely separate units, as we have today, started much later, when tall blocks of apartments for middle-class dwellers started getting built. When it comes to density in the RS zone, you can build a certain number of residential units based on your lot size. Simply divide your lot area (in square metres) by 75. For example, a 225 square metre lot can have 3 dwellings, and a 600 square metre lot can fit 8. But, there's a limit: non-corner lots can only have up to 8 dwellings, regardless of lot size. 😭 Also, remember that basement suites and garden suites count toward your total number of dwellings.
