Initially known as "soban," these side dishes were first introduced during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BC – 668 AD). Over time, the practice evolved, and banchan became an essential component of Korean meals, symbolizing hospitality, generosity, and communal dining. 🔹 Cultural Significance: Banchan holds deep cultural significance in Korean society. It is a reflection of the country's emphasis on harmony and balance in all aspects of life, including food. The variety of banchan served at a meal highlights the importance of diversity and balance in Korean cuisine, with each dish offering a unique flavor profile and texture. 🔹 How to Eat Banchan: When dining in Korea, banchan is typically served in small dishes placed in the center of the table to be shared among diners. It is customary for diners to take a small portion of banchan using their chopsticks or spoon and enjoy it alongside rice and other main dishes.
