This beautiful path on Kabi Kabi Country reminded me of the words of beloved Indigenous elder and Noongar man from Western Australia, Dr Noel Nannup. His wise words were shared during his incredible participation in Systems work facilitated by the Presencing Institute back in 2019 and 2020. He was collaborating with Otto Scharmer and others. It was powerful and transformational. Noel's words have stayed with me ever since. Noel acknowledged that thinking is systems is a challenge. He then humbly shared some wisdom that his own sister had shared with him: "All we need to focus on is one piece of the path to the future. And that's ours and we build that pathway forward and it changes us as builders of that path and in doing so it shapes the destination we are going to." My own reflections on this have led me to understand that the whole path will reveal itself over time but for now I can focus on each intentional step. I can polish and hone and look after each step. If I do this with integrity and purpose, my path, our shared way, will open up before us. Within each piece of the path, we must be able to see and sense the WHOLE. This is because each stone in the path is part of a wider, interconnected system, in relationship with every other stone, hopefully all headed in a shared, integral direction. So it is only natural that each and every stone has the WHOLE as its nucleus. Noel's (sister's) words have guided me on SO many occasions especially when I’ve felt overwhelmed or I’ve wanted things to happen quickly or I’ve told myself I’m not up to the challenge before me. Focusing on one conscious, intentional step at a time has helped me so much especially as I prepare for our wellbeing systems science presentation in Innsbruck this coming July with Antonella Delle Fave Viivi Pentikäinen and Diane Bowles Each of us is currently polishing our own stones that form part of an integral whole and we cannot wait to share this work with you all. 🍺 Oktoberfest from Munich to Michigan 🍻 Although I grew up in the eastern part of Germany and spent most of my adolescence in the north, I always loved traveling south to Bavaria to celebrate Oktoberfest in my twenties. Yes, you heard correctly- Oktoberfest, with its dirndls and lederhosen, was originally celebrated only in Bavaria, which is just one of Germany's 16 states (Bundesländer). However, over the last decade, other German states have started to join in, albeit with smaller-scale versions of the festival. A similar trend has happened in the U.S., where Oktoberfest has become a big cultural event. Since moving to Michigan, I’ve embraced celebrating Oktoberfest here, enjoying Weißwurst, Sauerkraut, Brezeln, and polka music. I’ve come to love how open the U.S. is to embracing and integrating various cultural traditions. Fun fact 1: My German kids have never celebrated Oktoberfest in Germany- they’ve only experienced it here in the U.S.! Fun fact 2: I often encounter the belief that only Germans can wear dirndls and lederhosen. From sleepless nights to standing ovations… this is why we do it. ✨ Organising the Female Business Festival with Janine feels a bit like having a baby (so I’ve heard 😅). The months of planning, the sleepless nights worrying about every detail, and the sheer anticipation as the big day draws closer… And then, just like that, it’s over—and you realise it was all so worth it. 💕 This year, our third festival, was really special. 🌟 The energy in the room was electric, thanks to our incredible speakers who shared their wisdom and stories: Hollie Ellis, Amanda Daniels-Allen, Catriona Salisbury, Laura Burton, Claire Clarke, Ilaria Sambi, Lynsay Gould and Rachael Howourth. 🙌 Thank you for inspiring us and reminding us why we show up for events like these. What stood out to me most was a shared sentiment among our delegates: 2024 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉. Many faced challenges they never saw coming. But one thing was clear—they’re ready to make 2025 their year. 💪 It was really special to hear how the festival gave them fresh ideas, actionable strategies, and a renewed sense of determination; this is a reminder of why we put these events on. It’s about more than learning—it’s about connection, empowerment, and hope for the future. 🌟 If one event wasn't enough, we went the extra mile and added a second event in the evening... The Female Business Awards, and what a celebration it was! 🎉 From winners to runners-up to finalists, Janine and I wanted everyone to win (even though we knew that wasn’t possible!). When the German traffic announcements happen in Italian... A few years ago, I traveled to Munich in late September. The radio jockey suddenly switched from German to Italian, informing about the parking situation around the festa della birra. I then remembered—it was the Italian weekend during Oktoberfest. Traditionally, many Italians join the festive crowd on the second weekend. You can hear a lot of “ciao bella” and animated conversations all around Munich. One of my Indian colleagues shared how Oktoberfest changed his perspective of Germans, whom he had perceived as more strict and uptight. During Oktoberfest, his train commute was filled with laughter and singing. Yes, it might be the alcohol speaking, but it’s more than that. It’s about finding joy together, celebrating no matter where we are from, changing perspectives, and welcoming each other. 🍻 This is where the concept of Völkerverständigung (international understanding) comes in. It emphasizes fostering peace and cooperation among nations through mutual respect and dialogue, promoting cultural exchange, reducing prejudices, and enhancing global solidarity. By encouraging open communication and collaboration, Völkerverständigung helps build trust and understanding between different peoples, contributing to a more harmonious and interconnected world. 🌍 Oktoberfest is a perfect example of Völkerverständigung in action. It brings together people from all over the world to celebrate, share cultures, and build connections. This festive atmosphere fosters mutual respect and understanding, breaking down barriers and reducing prejudices. However, Oktoberfest is just one opportunity among many. Kyiv Christmas Party Highlights 🎄⭐️ We wrapped up 2024 in the best way possible – with laughter, connection, and a celebration of everything that makes our team extraordinary. Sharing Perspectives from Lived Experiences: A Personal Reflection Eight years ago, I would never have imagined being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, let alone living with a permanent stoma. It was an unthinkable journey, but one that ultimately led to the founding of a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, advocating, and empowering others in similar situations. Through this journey, I’ve come to recognize the immense value of “The Lived Experience.” This concept is often underestimated, yet it holds the potential to shift perspectives in profound ways—not just within advocacy, but also in corporate environments. When we take the time to truly understand lived experiences, we uncover the reality of how decisions, policies, and procedures impact people on the ground. It’s about asking: Are the voices of those directly affected being heard? How equitable are the solutions we’re implementing? And, most importantly, whose equity are we benchmarking? For instance, the lived experience of someone in an informal settlement is vastly different from that of a resident in Mitchells Plain or Camps Bay. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work in such diverse contexts. What I’ve learned is that by investigating these experiences thoroughly, we have the power to dramatically improve outcomes. This applies to advocacy work, but also to leadership, business strategies, and policy design. Today, I share my story not only to advocate for equitable healthcare and policy reform but also to inspire others to embrace resilience and see challenges as opportunities for growth.
