Thoughts on Brown Women Comedy: Hilarious, relatable, and necessary. So what's the catch? 👇🏾 When Daizy Maan said she wanted to bring her all brown-women standup comedy show to Sydney – OF COURSE I said HELL YES! Daizy has run Brown Women Comedy for free for the last 2 years. In Melbourne. Then Adelaide. Now, in Sydney! (I’m un-secretly hoping to bring it to @newcastlecomedyclub!) Daizy has a long-standing history of community organisation; events, programs, shows. Despite that, her org Australian South Asian Centre was rejected for 3/3 grants they applied for by City of Sydney. Reason? There wasn't a strong enough connection to Sydney and they weren't sure if the event could be pulled off. This despite: - Daizy’s history of running 3948570 events before. - The MANY Sydney-based community members who wrote letters of support saying we would make it happen - including the venue, partners + comedians! (5 of the 7 artists were from Sydney!) - The fact that the show was a part of The Sydney Comedy Festival Result: Brown Women Comedy, Sydney was SOLD OUT before it was even marketed! That's how badly we needed it. This is the community equivalent of the VC-funding problem. Women-led orgs undergo an unnecessary level of scrutiny and failure-based questions – despite our track records and community influence. Grassroots community orgs that have been around and serving the community for YEARS and DECADES miss out on funding – despite their impact numbers, trust with community and reliability. These orgs and leaders are NECESSARY for the communities they serve. Because who TF else is serving (or even wanting to serve) these communities? City of Sydney, we invite you to take South Asian women leaders way more seriously. Come to the table that we’ve created with more serious offers, please. City of Parramatta, we’ll bring our businesses to you instead, are you ready?! City of Newcastle, Australia – my new hometown! - how serious are you about building community spaces and business? Because we’ve got propositions! But we only accept serious bidders. We are the talent. We are the creators. This is our table. And we are serious about COMMUNITY ✊🏾 #diversity #inclusion #media #production #community #womenfounders #womenincomedy #events #socent #funding

The volunteering tide is changing. Growing demands on people's time and resources means thinking differently about how we involve volunteers. Although not new information, it is a little intimidating when, like so many other charities, we're powered by volunteers. Regular volunteering is crucial to the running of our Baby Banks and supporting an increasing numbers of families. It's scary to question that. That said, we've recently introduced a calendar of "one-off" volunteering days at Little Village. It means those who'd love to get involved but can't commit each week, can do just that. Embraced by our existing volunteers, site teams, values and mission: they can help support families in poverty. It's not the answer to all by any means - we've got lots of tweaks and live learning still to come. But they're very popular, reaffirming to us it is not people's willingness to volunteer that is waning but that life is overwhelming, now more than ever. Our one-off days have welcomed new supporters, friends and family members of volunteers but also professional connections such as Adelaide Peck. It's widening our network with mission-fuelled impact as we've met midwives, DWP colleagues, students, old friends and new. All of which can now carry our share our message to their networks. Massive shout-out to Helen & Daniela who took this little idea, this little seed of "microvolunteering" and grown it into a flourishing flower... #Microvolunteering #oneoffvolunteering #volunteermanagement
Excited to spend the day volunteering at Little Village to support incredible families like Teesha’s! 💖 Teesha’s story, which I received ahead of my volunteering session today with Calleigh-Marie Lawrence, Daniela Spinello and Helen Speedy is a powerful testament to the resilience and strength of the families that the team at Little Village supports every day. They provide essential resources to parents and children in need, ensuring they have the tools to thrive. If you have a moment during your coffee break this morning, watch the video to hear Teesha’s inspiring journey and understand why this cause is so important. Let’s come together to make a difference! 🌟 #CommunitySupport #Volunteering #LittleVillage #FamiliesFirst https://lnkd.in/eKHpuZ_k

Day 11! If you're seeing this for the first time, check out my fundraiser! Get involved! If you're seeing it for the 11th time... Check out my fundraiser :D The story of Lily Madwhip will be one of the greatest shows of this decade. I fully believe it. TITLE: Madwhip LOGLINE: When 9yo Lily has a vision of her brother's death, she tries everything she can to stall and prevent it. GENRE: Horror/Thriller COMPS: Stranger Things meets Supernatural Madwhip is based off the NoSleep Subreddit series My Name is Lily Madwhip by William Dalphin. What began as a single story blossomed into a universe full of imaginative and complex characters struggling against each other, all seen through the eyes of a young girl. Madwhip is a supernatural/sci-fi horror epic ordained by God and driven by consequences. What happens when a child is granted the abilities of an angel, and then thrusted into a deadly tangle of fate? When she’s left alone to choose who lives and who dies? Set in the modern day, We will explore the consequences that come from placing the burden of such grave responsibilities on the shoulders of a child. This story has been heard by over 100,000 people. I personally fell in love with it, and I believe this series could rival the popularity of Stranger Things. And that's exactly what I plan to do. For this pilot, I've teamed up with the KING of Creepy Pasta storytelling, MrCreepyPasta! It was through MrCreepyPasta’s YouTube/podcasts that I discovered the story of Lily Madwhip. Along with MrCreepyPasta, we’ve also partnered with the voice of Lily herself, Michelle Renee. With their help, we will meticulously cast the lead role of Lily, as well as other major supporting characters that are important to the story. The finished product will also be posted to MrCreepyPasta’s YouTube channel. This will help us get as much attention to the Pilot as we can while we submit the pilot through the festival market. The fundraiser is imperative. If the fundraiser does not succeed, I will still proceed with the pilot, but I won't be able to pay my cast and crew like I wish too. Everyone involved is aware of this. We're all working toward the same goal. I will also not be able to seek things like CGI, which is important to bring to life the full vision of the pilot episode. However, my cast and crew come before CGI. You're going to love Madwhip. Help us bring an awesome, new show to the world! Please consider visiting the fundraiser! Consider contributing, if you can, and please share! My dream is to shatter Hollywood's mold and hold on the industry, and open the flood gates for new voices and stories. We can do that together. The fundraiser has tons of info, as well as links to the original Nosleep subreddit story, for you to read for yourself, and the original MrCreepyPasta video with the wonderful voice acting of Michelle Renee as Lily Madwhip for your listening pleasure! https://lnkd.in/eZ2Y37Ca

WHERE'S THE BEEF? And now, another installment of the Curmudgeon Report. Does the name Clara Peller ring a bell? She was front and center in the 1984 Wendy's ad campaign from Dancer Fitzgerald Sample. It's a great example of differentiating your product/service from the competitors. Frankly, today's direct response fundraisers could take a lesson. I get so many letters that leave me wondering . . . Where's the beef? The letters are generic. In a nutshell the format of the letter starts with "things are really bad." Richard Viguerie calls these letters "Cuss Letters." Why? Because they only cuss the problem. I'm reminded of a recent post from Jeff Brooks in the first of his 10 Commandments of Fundraising: Donors give to make something happen. You're probably thinking that's a penetrating look into the totally obvious but it's not. It's surprising how many letters tell me that my gift "ensures that Organization Name can advance" stuff. Ron Popeil's commercials taught me the power of a strong offer. While I have a few products (Pocket Fisherman and the Showtime knives) I never purchased the GLH-9 spray on hair even though several so-called friends suggested I could use it. The offer is the beef of any letter. It describes a problem and ends by telling me how I can help solve that problem and why I need to do that NOW. And sometimes I thinking the same thing as Clara Peller -- "I don't think anyone's there, I really don't." So the next time you're tempted to send out a package that's mostly bun -- or as my friends in Texas might say: "All hat. No cattle." -- go back to the drawing board. Beef up your offer. If you're interested, I'd be happy to share my 5 Principles for Effective Offers. But in the meantime, stay grumpy my friends. https://bit.ly/48hXIEg

Direct mail letters go to great lengths to help you reach more donors and raise more money: some of the best-performing letters are four pages long! Here’s why lengthy letters outperform shorter alternatives. > https://bit.ly/3KbnoXS #SirSpeedy #SirSpeedyBlog #DirectMail
