❄️🌊Scotland in the Arctic: an introduction to ScAN’s research at MASTS Annual Conference 2024❄️🌊 Earlier this month, Dr Lauren McWhinnie and Dr Kate Gormley hosted a special science session at the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MASTS Scotland) Annual Science meeting, at the Technology & Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. 🚢🦞❄️🏔️🐻❄️ “It’s been fantastic to see the interest in Arctic research this year at the MASTS ASM", Dr McWhinnie explained, "the session was the first time ScAN has been present at the MASTS ASM, and it was an opportunity to showcase some of the marine related Arctic research that is currently underway at Scottish institutions." 🚢🦞❄️🏔️🐻❄️ "ScAN is similar to MASTS in that the network aims to bring together a diverse group of researchers, practitioners and policy makers. Events like this are a great opportunity for academics like myself and Kate to showcase our own research considering the impacts of Arctic vessel traffic, but also to learn about the work of others from other disciplines and identify opportunities for collaboration.” Read more about the or projects involved in the showcase on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gJTCp5xZ

As professor at Department of Marine Technology (IMT) - NTNU I am proud that NTNU is taking part in this tremendous important mission of decarbonizating shipping. This is one of the most transformative shifts in transportation since we did go from sailing to steam and then oil fuels. There is no silver bullet in terms of fuel types and energy sources. We are in hurry to take action meeting emissions goals of greenhouse gases. There will be hybrid solutions including batteries, green and blue fuels, wind assisted propulsion using sails, nuclear… New supply chains of fueling must be developed. Norway can play an important role in the transition by producing blue fuels from natural gas with CCS. The cost of energy will increase leading to exciting times for the field of marine technology. Everything is in play again optimizing designs and solutions. This is also the time where new business positions will be taken.

We had the second meeting with our Floating Future Project Advisory Committee today. There were very interesting discussions about how to connect science and citizens, science and business, and science and policy makers. What are the obstacles and challenges regarding upscaling of floating structures to contribute to the long term liveability in the Netherlands? And how can we address them in our research project and case studies.
