Why are we still stuck in this old-school mindset of buying cheap, selling high and paying celebrities to promote more stuff we don’t need and then patting ourselves on the back for it? It’s 2024—this is not the way forward. Yesterday at Breakit #EcomDay, where Inrego was one of the finalists for the Sustainable E-commerce Journey of the Year 2024, I was struck by the contradiction in the room. The only award was for sustainability, but that sure wasn’t the focus of the day. Instead, the conversation was dominated by how to make consumers consume more—the very thing driving our environmental disaster. We're in the middle of a climate crisis, and yet, we’re still talking about linear consumption like it’s the way forward (although the reality of it very much looks like the picture below). Seriously, what's going on? We’re past the point where we can afford to ignore the impact of overconsumption. Let’s wake up and change the conversation. 🌍 Technology for Good: Aligning Innovation with Impact Technology has immense power to shape our world. When used thoughtfully, it can go beyond convenience and efficiency to create meaningful, measurable change. This idea of Technology for Good drives my curiosity and fuels my passion for finding ways to align innovation with sustainability and social impact. One area where this is particularly evident is the circular economy. Resale, reuse, and extending product lifecycles aren’t just sustainable practices—they are transformative approaches that redefine how we think about consumption. Resale programs inspire me because they bring these ideas to life, proving that commerce can be both profitable and regenerative. Brands leading the charge are setting the tone for the future, becoming tastemakers who inspire their customers to take meaningful action for the environment. But transforming e-commerce at large to become more sustainable is no small task. Achieving true circularity requires rethinking entire supply chains, which can be a significant challenge for many businesses. However, there are opportunities for e-commerce players to make meaningful contributions to the environment in ways that are feasible today. One exciting possibility is the integration of biodiversity credits into e-commerce. Organizations like Savimbo have shown that it’s possible to create scientifically backed methodologies to estimate biodiversity impact, going far beyond traditional carbon footprint metrics. These credits enable businesses to support initiatives like protecting vital ecosystems or iconic species, such as jaguars. Imagine an e-commerce platform where every transaction actively contributes to environmental restoration—making sustainability part of the shopping experience in a way that resonates deeply with consumers. Tools like Shopify apps could bring these concepts to life, making biodiversity credits accessible to businesses and consumers alike. Pairing such tools with circular economy tools—resale, reuse, and extended product lifecycles—could transform commerce into a force for good. These are my personal reflections—ideas that inspire me to explore how Technology for Good can bridge the gap between commerce, innovation, and impact. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁: Transitioning from physical stores to online shopping dramatically lowers the energy and emissions associated with traditional retail spaces, contributing significantly to carbon footprint reduction.     2. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀: Online platforms facilitate the promotion and distribution of sustainable products, increasing access to organic, renewable, and eco-conscious goods that might not be available locally.     5. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲: A rising trend in digital commerce is re-commerce, which gives products a new life instead of ending up in landfills. This practice not only extends the lifecycle of products but also promotes a circular economy, further reducing the environmental impact. For me, the notion of "circularity" would strike up thoughts of altruistic sustainability goals and environmental responsibility and - while those are certainly important aspects of the circular economy - circularity can also be about layering additional levels of profit onto your bottom line or adding stability to increasingly volatile-yet-vital supply chains. The research being conducted by Peter C. Evans, PhD and his team including Jeff Mikos and Túlio Henrique Martins is truly original and represents a significant contribution to advancing these topics.
