Exactly 125 years after the First Hague Peace Conference and 111 years after its festive opening, the Peace Palace is still very much alive. Every day, the institutions in the Palace work on the peaceful settlement of conflicts and on "Peace through Law". The Carnegie Foundation ensures that the monumental building is suitable for all users, prepares it for the future and supports all the organisations in the Palace with various services. In addition, the foundation promotes and supports work in the field of international law through public activities. An impression of our activities can now be found in our 2023 annual report: https://lnkd.in/eg6hrsXg #PeacePalace #PeaceBuilding #InternationalLaw #TheHague #AnnualReport

Indigenous History Month - Treaty Truth. Treaties were – and remain – agreements between sovereign nations to share land and resources. Our treaties have not been dissolved by the passage of time. They are still legally binding. The Crown is still the legal name for British as well as our federal and provincial governments - and settlers, as citizens of the Crown / Canada, still have Treaty obligations. Colonizers had a lot more experience with creating legal documents and it’s objectively fair to say that Indigenous Peoples were taken advantage of in terms of Treaty interpretation. Treaties are intended to be living agreements that are amendable as situations change. This right was made inaccessible when the Indian Act made seeking legal counsel illegal for Indigenous peoples for the first 75 years of confederation. We Are All Treaty People. #Indigenous #Diversity #Equity #HumanRights #IndigenousHistoryMonth

The Week of Solidarity with Self-Governing Territories is observed annually from May 25 to 31 since 1999. This week is dedicated to supporting and recognizing the struggles of peoples in non-self-governing territories around the world, particularly in their pursuit of independence, self-determination, and human rights. Some of the self-governing territories include: - Western Sahara - Palestine - Gibraltar - Falkland Islands (Malvinas) - Guam - U.S. Virgin Islands - American Samoa - Puerto Rico - U.S. Minor Outlying Islands.

Historical Context: The Balfour Declaration of 1917 expressed British support for a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, which was then under Ottoman rule and later came under British mandate. The San Remo Conference in 1920 further endorsed this idea, effectively laying the groundwork for Jewish immigration to Palestine and the eventual establishment of Israel. But my observation highlights a critical ethical issue: the rights of the indigenous Palestinian population were largely ignored in these agreements. The transfer of land based on colonial decisions without the consent of the local population raises questions about the legitimacy of such actions. This perspective aligns with the view that these declarations facilitated colonialism, allowing powerful nations to impose their will on less powerful populations.

I have no idea why we- the civilized world- give two shits about the United Nations and some idiotic 'Decolonization Committee'. Why do we have to sit there and make nice with buffoons, fascists, communists, cannibals, and warlords, who have run their own countries into the ground? The Falklands are one of a tiny handful of First World democracies which exist in an enormous area of the globe, an area which includes the continents of Africa and South America, but which is otherwise completely characterised by failed states, dictatorships, corruption, and poverty. On the other hand, Ascension Island, South Georgia, South Sandwich, Saint Helena, and Tristan da Cunha are the other prosperous and free democracies in this colossal chunk of the earth- and incidentally, they are British dependent territories as well. Roughly, the nearest other First World democracy to *both* the west AND east of the Falklands is Australia (think about that- think about how far you would have to travel to land in a safe and stable nation), the nearest to to the north is Barbados, and the nearest to the south is either Denmark (in Greenland) or Canada. (And here's a Fun Fact for you- Canada, Australia, and Barbados are products of British colonialism, and Greenland IS a Danish colony- yet each of these places is far preferable to any country who sits at the Decolonization Committee...) No African nor South American state, despite being closer geographically to the Falklands, can match the overall quality of life, safety, prosperity, and freedom long enjoyed by these islands......so, to paraphrase General Jeremy Moore, let them remain 'under the government desired by their inhabitants. God Save the King.' If you think young people are uninterested in peacebuilding, you’re doing it wrong. I had lots to think about today with friends and colleagues at Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland in Dublin as I consider what it means to do peace building and dialogue 26 years after the Good Friday Agreement. We need a new vocabulary to describe how the divide and legacy of our past permeate our lives. We need to be creative. We need to talk, not just be in the same room. We need to have a global lens and a local heart. We need to be better and more relevant when talking about the past so it doesn’t feel like a history lecture. I need to get better at articulating the work we do Belfast YMCA because the 300 word answer in the written report isn’t cutting it. Lots to do.
