Seeing someone move out of the country can seem fascinating, but what often goes unseen is the emotional roller coaster that person is experiencing: - Leaving loved ones behind without knowing when you'll meet again. - Stepping out of your comfort zone, unsure of what you'll do and how you'll manage. - Starting everything from scratch in a completely different country with no familiar faces. - Finding a relevant job without any experience in that country. These are just a few of the thoughts and emotions one experiences when leaving their home country. My journey of moving out was very similar! However, I didn't let my emotions overcome my ambitions and took the following steps to settle in the beautiful city of Riyadh and land a relevant job: - Took a Month’s break after landing in Riyadh to absorb the change. - Served my notice period remotely, allowing me to continue my job search without worrying about expenses back home in Pakistan. - Started #networking with recruiters on LinkedIn. - Modified my #CV based on feedback from various recruiters I met via LinkedIn. - Researched the #jobmarket in the KSA. - Applied for every relevant job opportunity. I was fortunate enough to land my current role at Expertise Company Limited. Although I'm still new to the KSA and figuring things out, so in case if you need any help with your job search and process on how to take risk and change your fate, feel free to DM me! P.S. 🌎 First Three Months in Saudi Arabia: A Journey of Growth and Challenges It's been three months since I moved to Saudi Arabia, and professionally, these have been some of the best months of my career. However, outside the office, life has been a bit of a rollercoaster! 🎢 This is the first time I've lived outside my home country, and the initial days were spent searching for familiarity. 🍛 Every time I found Indian food that tasted like home, I felt a little more at ease. One of the early challenges was figuring out where to eat in Riyadh. Lunch and dinner were a struggle during the first few days (thankfully, the hotel provided breakfast!). In that same week, I began the paperwork for my resident permit (Iqama). 📝 After a few hiccups, including a system outage at the medical center, I completed both the medical test and registration with the Saudi Council of Engineers. 🏗️ within a week. By the second week, things started to improve. I was assigned to a site and finished the mandatory courses to start the real work. 🌟 My daily routine became clearer: a two-hour commute 🚗 to and from the site, and finally, sorted meals—hotel breakfast and contractor-provided lunch. 🍽️ By the end of the week, I had my Iqama in hand and felt more settled. Then came the third week—the toughest one yet. I had to move out of the hotel and found a fully furnished studio apartment. 🏠 While it was closer to my site, I suddenly had to do everything on my own: make breakfast, clean, cook, do the dishes, and laundry. And the most daunting task? Figuring out my commute! 🚕 My site had access control, and cabs were both rare and expensive. It was a steep learning curve! I think this post is getting long—I'll continue sharing the next part of my journey in an upcoming post! Then, plan from there whether to continue or not * Take certifications and learn arabic language to increase your chance and build your CV. However, language is not a barrier when working in Saudi * Improve your softskills - public speaking & negotiation skills (very important) prior to coming to Saudi * Have a Linkedin profile and apply through Linkedin, it will greatly help. Apply through manpower companies which provide manpower for Saudi. * Be a specialist and good in what you do. Think what you can contribute to the company * Salary comes with experience. Hence, accept the single package first and do not think for the family package yet * Saudinization is a concept where saudi empowers their citizen. So higher management and bosses will be saudis and sometimes younger saudis. Learnt to manage your boss * Be ready to work in the same position for years as expats will not be in a higher / senior position * Be open and ready to work with multiple nationalities as your team will be comprises of people from other countries (US, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and even China etc) * Once you work in Saudi, dont forget to save money and live within your means
