According to the UC Santa Barbara Global Plastics AI Tool, which is a joint project with the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, banning #Polystyrene as a #packaging material will have no material impact on mismanaged, incinerated, or landfilled #waste #globally. Changing to alternative materials will lead to an #increase in #material consumption due to lighter nature of PS and need for thicker gauges to provide the same performance. Furthermore, with the introduction of the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA) in North America and the continued great work of Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) in Europe, the PS industry has come together to increase the recycling access and rates of PS globally. Polystyrene is safe, essential, recyclable, and a low-carbon solution for packaging. We should not be a target for polymer bans or exclusions at the #UN #GlobalPlasticsTreaty at #INC5.

BPI is #ScienceBased 🔬🌱 It is fundamentally incorrect that BPI-certified compostable products are more toxic than traditional plastics. In addition to baseline requirements that all products must meet, ASTM compostability standards require tests including strict heavy metals limits, plant toxicity, and biodegradation in compost. “Composters that participate in the USCC’s Seal of Testing Assurance, that meet the program requirements, can accept and process BPI certified compostable products and meet state operating permit and product distribution standards,” says Frank Franciosi, US Composting Council's Executive Director.
