Join us in reliving a significant milestone at the #Lautoka Market in Fiji, as the market made significant strides towards its #sustainability journey this October with the handover of 20 green wheelie bins for the segregation and collection of organic waste. This initiative, part of the #RecycleOrganics Program funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, aims to streamline separation at the source, ensuring that organic waste generated by the market’s vendors is composted efficiently to produce nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that then becomes available to the public. ♻️ 🌱 "By providing bins for organic waste separation, we can facilitate the process of producing high quality #compost, making it easier for communities and the Lautoka City Council to manage organic waste. We can raise awareness about #climatechange and #methane mitigation, contributing to a more sustainable future for #Fiji." - Head of Cooperation at the Canadian High Commission, David Fournier. By turning waste into valuable compost and embracing #circularity, the Lautoka Market is not only addressing waste management issues and reducing GHG emissions, but it is also empowering local communities to sustainably grow their own food. It also generates savings for the city in the transportation and final disposal of waste, while educating people on the importance of sustainable waste management practices. 🌿 This handover marks a substantial step towards a greener future for Lautoka and serves as an inspiring example for markets across the region to replicate. 🍃 📝 Read More ➡ https://lnkd.in/d9SEcd9Q ImplementaSur CCAP

Western Cape’s Commitment to Organic Waste Diversion The Western Cape Government has introduced a significant shift in how we handle organic waste. By 2022, all organic waste generators were required to divert 50% of their organic waste away from landfills, with a target of achieving 100% diversion by 2027. This regulation is a pivotal step towards creating a more sustainable future and reducing the environmental impact of waste. For businesses, industries, and municipalities, this means taking proactive steps toward waste management practices that support the circular economy, such as: Implementing composting programs to recycle organic waste back into the environment. Investing in on-site composting solutions to transform food scraps and garden waste into valuable resources. Educating employees and customers on the importance of waste sorting and diversion. The goal is clear: divert organic waste to reduce landfill use, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create valuable soil amendments. It’s time for businesses to embrace composting and other sustainable practices as part of their environmental responsibility. As we move closer to the 2027 deadline, let’s work together to create a greener, more sustainable Western Cape. #WasteDiversion #Sustainability #OrganicWaste #Composting #CircularEconomy #WesternCape #WasteManagement #EcoFriendlyBusiness #Regulations #ZeroWaste https://lnkd.in/dmFnDsU8

🌊 Turning the tide on marine #plasticpollution: A collaborative effort in Thailand 🌊 Since 2019, IUCN Thailand, alongside project partners and local stakeholders, has tackled marine plastic pollution across Koh Yao District (Phang Nga), Libong sub-district (Trang) and Ngao-Bang Non sub-district (Ranong). To date, over 5,000 tons of recyclable materials have been managed, transforming waste management in coastal and island communities. On 29 October, IUCN representatives Pornrutai Chotvijit and Narissara Borikul shared project insights at the Forum on Mitigating Plastic Pollution from Runoff hosted by UN Environment Programme. Key takeaways: 🔹 Managing plastic pollution requires addressing all types of waste at the community level, with household waste sorting as the essential first step. Tailored solutions based on waste type, local context and policy alignment are crucial, as is community involvement for impactful waste management. 🔹 Sustainable industry engagement calls for industry-wide collaboration across the supply chain to foster sustainable investment, rather than relying on individual companies. 🔹 Partnering across sectors is key to driving the infrastructure and regulatory changes needed for long-lasting impact. Together, these efforts empower community-driven waste systems and promote a cleaner, healthier marine environment. 🌿 Bangkok moves forward in the fight against food waste 🌿 Great news from the heart of Bangkok where a groundbreaking initiative is reshaping how the food industry tackles waste! The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has successfully launched a composting program, encouraging the separation of perishable waste. This initiative has seen active participation from 184 markets and over 600 restaurants, transforming waste into valuable compost used to fertilize city parks. ♻️ Why is this important? Food waste in landfills decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas, contributing to environmental pollution and climate change. By composting the food, we turn it into nutrient-rich soil without releasing greenhouse gases. 🍽️ At Yindii where our mission is to combat food waste with the local community, we're thrilled to see such alignment in goals. This initiative not only advances sustainability but has also saved the city a remarkable 141 million baht (around US$3.8 million) in waste disposal costs within a year, emphasizing the economic benefits of mindful waste management. 📈 This success story highlights a significant opportunity for the food industry to adopt more sustainable practices that can lead to both environmental and financial gains. By integrating waste management solutions, businesses can enhance their operational efficiency and contribute to a more sustainable future. 🤝 We're inspired by Bangkok's commitment and look forward to more collaborations that push promote sustainability in the food sector. Reducing Food Waste with Bokashi: A Sustainable Solution for Cape Town Food waste is a growing global issue, with millions of tons ending up in landfills every year. This not only wastes resources but also releases harmful greenhouse gases. However, innovative solutions like the Bokashi method are turning this waste into a resource that benefits communities and the environment. What is Bokashi? Bokashi is a composting process that uses a special mix of beneficial microorganisms to ferment food waste, transforming it into nutrient-rich compost. Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi works on a variety of food types, including meat and dairy, which makes it an ideal solution for households and businesses aiming to reduce their food waste impact. How Bokashi Works Using the Bokashi method, food scraps are placed in an airtight bin, covered with Bokashi bran (a mixture of wheat bran and microorganisms), and left to ferment. The fermentation process not only reduces odor but also minimizes the space needed for composting. After a few weeks, the fermented waste can be safely incorporated into soil, enriching it with nutrients that promote healthy plant growth. KGUM Projects Pty Ltd in Cape Town At KGUM Projects, we’re using Bokashi as part of our mission to promote sustainable waste management across Cape Town. By reducing food waste through this process, we’re helping households, restaurants, and other businesses turn waste into a positive impact. Each step we take with Bokashi moves us closer to a greener, more sustainable future. #SustainableWaste #BokashiComposting #FoodWasteSolutions #KGUMProjects #CapeTownEco #WasteToResource

The numbers are stark: 65% of organic food waste in South Africa still ends up in landfills, representing a massive, missed opportunity for sustainable resource utilization. But there's hope on the horizon, with pioneering initiatives leading the way toward a more sustainable future. The Western Cape Government has emerged as a trailblazer, implementing an internationally recognized organic waste reduction strategy that aims for: - 50% reduction in organic waste to landfills by 2022. - Complete ban on organic waste to landfills by 2027. Leading retailers like Woolworths are showing how corporate South Africa can make a difference. Their comprehensive waste management program includes: - Partnerships with FoodForward SA to redistribute surplus food to communities in need. - Commitment to halve food loss and waste across operations by 2030. - Innovative supplier engagement programs to reduce waste throughout the supply chain. This proves that industry leaders can create effective systems to manage organic waste responsibly while contributing to food security and environmental sustainability. The challenge now is to scale these successful models across all provinces and companies. We need a unified national approach where: - Provincial governments adopt similar progressive waste management policies. - More businesses embrace circular economy principles. - Communities are empowered to participate in waste reduction initiatives. The path forward is clear: by following these proven frameworks, we can transform our organic waste from an environmental burden into a valuable resource for building a better South Africa. Reducing Food Waste – Gangman Style! Solid food waste in municipal landfills contributes approximately 58% of methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures and nearly a million premature deaths annually. To reduce the impact of food waste on the environment, South Korea has been pioneering several impactful measures such as: ✅ Banning all food waste in landfills since 2005 ✅ Stopped ocean dumping of water from food waste since 2013 ✅ Bins with scales that charge residents of high-tech building apartments for waste by weight ✅ Converting food waste into fertilizer, animal feed, biogas, and bio-oil. ✅ Charging households ~ $6/month for biodegradable bags, covering 60% of disposal costs in Seoul. 🏅 The result? 95% of food waste is now recycled, as compared to less than 2% in 1995 Despite this progress, South Koreans still waste more food per capita than Europeans and North Americans! If you'd like to know how you can reduce your kitchen waste with simple daily steps, send me a DM mentioning “Zero Waste Kitchen” and I’ll be happy to share a short presentation with tips on waste segregation, meal planning, home composting, preparing bio-enzymes, and repurposing food scraps! . . . #foodwaste #greenhousegases #landfill #methaneemissions #foodwaste #bioenzymes #LIPostingChallengeIndia #biodegradable #wastesegregation #SouthKorea #Seoul #ZeroWaste #recycle #reuse #repurpose
