Generative AI could significantly worsen the e-waste crisis, with projections estimating it may add 1.2 to 5 million metric tons of hazardous waste by 2030. The rapid turnover of high-performance hardware needed for AI systems drives this problem, contributing to the tens of millions of tons of electronics discarded annually, much of which pollutes landfills. Sustainable practices like refurbishing components, extending hardware life, and improving recycling infrastructure could reduce AI-related e-waste by up to 86%. Legislative efforts, such as the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Environmental Impacts Act, seek to address these impacts but lack enforcement mechanisms. #GenAI #AI #EWaste #Tech
