I know it's a little late but I wanted to share how me and a few co-worker celebrated Black History month this year. We wanted to highlight a black-owned restaurant so we went to Monarch Market and tried Rolled AF which specializes in modern Mexican food. And we're off! Happy Black History Month to all! Kraft Heinz in the early front-running for cultural gaffe of the month. At least this is a clean cut example of why diverse hiring matters in supporting your commercial goals. What's wrong with this? There is a prevailing negative stereotype around the presence of Black fathers. Creating an ad in which the one parent missing is the Black father, is... less than welcome. The expectation is not that everyone creating a major marketing campaign will know this. The expectation is that everyone creating a major marketing campaign will know you need to understand the cultural nuances you want to dabble in before you dabble in them. The hope is that eventually you'll have enough/some people of Black heritage working on these ads that someone will be able to point this out to you before you go to print.

I am simply in Awe. This was a personal moment of encouragement because often when I think of the first 18 years of my life, these were not the stories that I was aware of. Of course, this happened over the last 50-60 years. I can see the whole story and remain.."I AM INSPIRED TO CONTINUE PURSUING MY DREAM of leaving a Legacy for my family"! My Pitch Deck! https://lnkd.in/gUWQj5_5

The Olympics started last week, and recently, I learned a story about the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Her name was Alice Coachman, and she achieved the high jump at the 1948 Olympics. I had never heard of her. But she wasn’t the first person of color whose victory went unsung. We’ve been ignoring and, in some cases, erasing black history from the record for centuries. One of the first times it was brought to my attention was when Fawn Weaver shared the story of Nathan “Nearest” Green, who was an enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel how to distill. He became the first master distiller for Jack Daniel as a free man after the Civil War. Knowing this, it seems a great injustice that when Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey was launched in 2017, we had all heard of Jack Daniel but not Nearest Green. Uncle Nearest Premium whiskey is now valued at over a billion dollars and has garnered over a thousand awards. And in 2019, Victoria Eady Butler, a descendant of Nathan Green, became the first black woman to be a whiskey master blender. She was named Master Blender of the Year by Whiskey Magazine, VinePair, and The Spirits Business in 2021. Having tried this whiskey, I can tell you it’s worth the hype. (Actually Rawnica Dillingham bought me my first Uncle Nearest Old Fashioned!) But Fawn Weaver’s dedication to its history brings me overwhelming joy. Nathan Green, Alice Coachman, Claudette Colvin, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan - frankly, there is no end to the list of people who have shaped history through their achievements but were overlooked for the color of their skin. Thank you, Fawn Weaver, for opening my eyes to stories like these. It’s up to all of us to keep pushing for recognition, equity, and celebration of the contributions that have long been overlooked. I’d also like to point out that Fawn recently released a book called Love & Whisky, which tells the story of Nathan Green. It just came out on June 18th, and it has already received some great reviews on its Amazon page. Here's the link if you'd like to add it to your reading list: https://lnkd.in/ewqe-bQY #UncleNearest #SpiritsIndustry #Diversity

We always found a way and we will continue to always find a way, no matter the circumstances. 💯 One of my favorite things to do while traveling is finding and researching local Black History landmarks. These sites usually contain info that’s rarely taught about in schools. This is a GREAT way to teach your kids Black History too, so that they can see where these events took place. It’s like a mini-field trip. Because yeah, our schools should teach this and we should demand it, but we can’t wait on them to get it right. There’s even an opportunity to do this in your hometown because there are so many sites that we overlook. Now, about Sarah Estell 🍦 👇🏾 “Sarah Estell, a free black woman in the slavery era, ran an ice cream parlor and sweet shop near here. She overcame the many hurdles faced by free persons of color, and her venture thrived. Her catering firm met the banquet needs of the city’s firemen, church socials, and political parties from 1840~1860.” 🍨 ✊🏾 🚨Did you know about Sarah? Lemme know! #nashville #tennessee #icecream #desert #blackhistory #ushistory #foodie #chef #bakery #dei

PEOPLE + PERFORMANCE = POWER Having the right people with the right performance is crucial for our company’s success. If our people aren't the right fit, help them become the right fit. If their performance isn’t where it needs to be, work with them to improve it. At the finish line, it’s the collective effort of our people and their performance that drives us to victory. Here’s a glimpse into our company culture at Project: Black. Our lifestyle brand isn't just a label; it's reflected in how we treat our people like family.
