The best way to improve your startup pitch is to practice. Seems obvious but I'd estimate that half of the pitches I hear suffer from these simple omissions: ✔ lack of a crisp message that is not overly complicated ✔ no clear narrative or story arc, jumps around randomly ✔ no clear vision / mission expressed - doesn't feel inspirational ✔ vitamin product not a pain killer - what's really different? ✔ lack of founder / market fit Lots of other stuff is important of course (like the substance of the pitch) but these are table-stakes in any great pitch. 🔍 ACV: A Metric Founders Regularly Get Wrong 🔍 I talk to a lot of founders, and one critical metric stands out for often being misunderstood by founders: Annual Contract Value (ACV). 📊 I'm excited to clarify ACV, highlighting its significance and real impact on the growth path of your startup. 🚀 🤔So, what exactly is ACV, and why does it play such a pivotal role in the scalability of your startup? One of the things that's really important about ACV is it helps you understand the size or magnitude of the contracts that you're selling. And then larger contract values unlock particular types of more expensive sales and marketing activities like large conference sponsorships, expensive AEs who travel and wine and dine clients, etc. Watch the video and let me know what you think!!

The power of "What we learned". I love it when startups tell in their pitch the unique insights they learned from being in the market and especially interacting with customers – no matter if they gained these insights with their current startup or before. Malte Kosub did this amazingly in his Parloa pitch, outlining what they learned with their agency before founding Parloa and how they leveraged these unique insights. You don't have to be great at pitching to succeed in startups but for those who can pitch well, it's a startup superpower as useful as being a great coder or a successful salesperson. I may now be the most-booked pitch coach in Australian private and university accelerators, including the best-known, Startmate.
