https://lnkd.in/e3mD5VA4 With the launch of the Green Deal in 2019, the European Commission has placed the fight against climate change at the forefront of its agenda. One major challenge will be funding the EU’s #energy transition strategy. In his 2024 report on European competitiveness, Mario Draghi has identified securitisation as a particularly suitable financing tool.

❗ State of the Energy Union 2024 report recalls that all Member States ▶ must submit their final updated #NationalEnergyClimatePlans as soon as possible, to ensure collective achievement of the 2030 #energy and #climate goals. ➡ The assessment of the draft updated #NECPs published in December 2023 shows that Member States have taken a step in the right direction, but this is not yet sufficient to reduce net #GreenhouseGasEmissions by at least 55% by 2030 and they need to take into account the Commission's recommendations for their final #NECP Plans. ➡ The European Commission also published on 🗓 11 September 2024 a REPORT ON THE FUNCTIONING OF THE REGULATION ON THE GOVERNANCE OF THE ENERGY UNION AND CLIMATE ACTION, which concludes that ▶ the #regulation is playing an important role in keeping the EU on track to meet its 2030 targets by making planning and reporting more coherent, integrated, and simpler. Ahead of today's Safeguard Symposium in Canberra, marking one year of the reformed Safeguard Mechanism, CMI's Chair Dr. Kerry Schott shared her thoughts on how the combined carrot and stick approach of the reformed Mechanism will contribute to Australia's emissions reduction targets. Of particular note: the Safeguard Mechanism is just one part of an evolving climate policy ecosystem that, in tandem, supports private investment decisions in cleaner technologies and additional abatement to drive emissions down. #NEWsPoland 📙🔗The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment has submitted a preliminary version of the "National Energy and Climate Plan to 2030" update to the European Commission. The document presents the first of two required analytical scenarios, i.e. the baseline scenario (WEM, with existing measures). 🇵🇱This scenario reproduces the current assessment of Poland's possible contribution to the EU climate and energy targets for 2030. The trajectory enabling Poland to achieve a GHG emission reduction target close to the EU level (i.e. 55%) will be presented in a more ambitious transition scenario (WAM, with additional measures), which is being advanced at the Ministry of Climate and Environment. 🇵🇱The target document, which includes two scenarios: a baseline (WEM) and an ambitious one (WAM), will be submitted for full public consultation and sector consultation and then finalized in late Q2/early Q3 2024. ▶️https://lnkd.in/di34ACcv

Germany on Track to Reach 2030 Climate Targets, Government Says 'The Federal Government believes that Germany’s climate targets for 2030 are achievable. “Providing we stay on course, we are set to achieve our 2030 climate targets,” said Economics and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck in view of new data from the German Environment Agency (UBA). According to the Climate Protection Act, this is the year by which greenhouse gas emissions in Germany are to be reduced by 65 percent as compared to 1990 levels. In its latest report, the UBA projects a reduction of just under 64 percent. The Ministry says this target is now within reach. Germany plans to be climate-neutral by 2045. The planned energy transition is crucial in meeting this target. By 2030, at least 80 percent of electricity consumption is to be covered by renewable energies.' https://lnkd.in/dSD4AhUf #esgafricaconference #esg #gasemissions #climatechange #enivronmental #social #governance

🌍 The Climate Change Committee (CCC) advises the UK to commit to 81% emissions reduction by 2035 The CCC has recommended a target for the UK's 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC): an 81% reduction in territorial greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2035. This advice, requested by Secretary of State for Energy Ed Miliband, will guide the UK’s climate commitments as we approach the Seventh Carbon Budget in February 2025. Professor Piers Forster, interim Chair of the CCC, emphasised the significance of this target: “With climate damages already felt worldwide, targeting an 81% reduction by 2035 is both necessary and achievable. Technologies like EVs, heat pumps, and renewables are available and competitively priced. Investment in these solutions, alongside government policy clarity, can secure this ambitious target.” #ClimateAction #Sustainability #NetZero #UK2035 #CarbonReduction https://lnkd.in/eHQ5KSt9

Today is World Environment Day 🌍 When the UK parliament signed the 2050 net-zero target, it was widely considered to be world-leading. However, there has been slow progress on delivery. There remain significant gaps in the plans to deliver net zero, with the Climate Change Committee (CCC) research indicating that is a lack of urgency in policy delivery to achieve this. IEMA sets out 3 policy recommendations to the government, looking into future homes standards, onshore wind and support for the transition to low-emission vehicles. Read IEMA's 18 calls for critical action from the upcoming election: https://bit.ly/3yI6s8W #WorldEnvironmentDay #GenerationRestoration #climatechange #energy #environment #GE24 #UKGeneralElection
