🌍🔆 Harnessing Solar Energy for a Sustainable Future in Glover Park, Washington, D.C. As part of the GIS for Climate Action MOOC, I've been actively exploring the potential of solar energy to inform public policy decisions. One of the key activities I engaged in was identifying solar energy potential to aid decision-makers in implementing policies aimed at transitioning Glover Park to solar power. Understanding Insolation: Insolation refers to the amount of solar radiation energy received per unit area over a given period, measured in kilowatt hours per square meter (kWh/m²). By symbolizing this data, we can visualize areas receiving the highest solar radiation in red and the lowest in blue. For context, powering a typical house requires an average of 26 to 33 kWh per day. The data I'm presenting shows the average annual insolation values, highlighting the months with the highest solar potential: May, June, and July. Key Insights: South-facing Roofs: In the Northern Hemisphere, buildings with south-facing roofs free of obstructions like trees tend to receive the most solar radiation, making them prime candidates for solar panel installation. Energy Distribution: Not all buildings receive the same amount of solar energy. This variability underscores the importance of targeted assessments for optimal solar panel placement. By leveraging GIS technology to analyze insolation, we can make informed decisions to enhance the sustainability and energy efficiency of our communities. This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also promotes economic benefits through reduced energy costs.
