Things I wish I had known before I started my career in Talent Acquisition, or my learning after working in Talent Acquisition for approximately 2 years : 1. 80% Mindset, 20% Resilience - If, while starting your work, you sit with the sinking feeling that you won't be able to find the right person for the job, 99 times out of 100 you won't be able to. That is when mindset is required. If you are hired for a position and your seniors or team lead have trusted you with the requirement, that means you have what it takes to get the job done. No requirement is easy; if it were that easy, then you or a hiring agency wouldn't be hired in the first place. That is when resilience is needed: knowing the challenges and also believing that you can overcome them. 2. Good days and Bad days - Life is not an upward-sloping linear graph. I wish it were, but it's not. It's more like an up-and-down kind of thing. Your integrity towards work should be consistent. And things will always work out. 3. Adding Value to Your Organization - This goes without saying. Every organization may be a bit different in some ways, but the core of it is the same: it is about value addition. So, running from one team to another or changing companies in the hope that it gets better does not happen, but you do get better at your job. 4. Don't celebrate too soon - Celebrate your work every day, be grateful that you have the opportunity to do better every day. Don't just wait for the big wins like joining or reaching a certain number. Happy laid off anniversary! 🎉 Can't believe it's been a whole year since I logged in and was greeted with the news. In the last year I found myself participating in a mental olympics which included tears, self-doubt, and rounding out with a testament to my perseverance and resilience. Being laid off is a challenge in itself and trying to remain optimistic and see the light is also one. Here are the data points of my job search: - 250+ applications sent - 15 mid to late stage interviews - 3 offers I've dealt with being ghosted, generic response rejections, amongst other vague excuses. There has been a general lack of attention/care to candidate experience that left me feeling dehumanized and shunned by an industry I built my career in. I implore everyone who is on a hiring team or has any input on growth to do better and be better. In the midst of all this chaos, I found solace. I explored substitute teaching, lent my expertise in consulting for Talent, DEI, and Recruitment projects, and made sure to up-skill whenever I could. Not surprising that these experiences brought me fulfillment and a sense of purpose that I hadn't felt in awhile. If we're being honest losing a stability absolutely blows but sometimes you're also just going through the motions... I got really good at holding space for two contradictory ideas being right. As I gear up for my next move, I'm honing in on what truly matters to me- aligning my career with my core values. It's about finding that sweet spot where passion meets purpose. Meeting people where they're at and bringing them along for the journey. To building community wherever I go; huge shoutout to my amazing loved ones who really held it down and refused to let me suffer in silence. I can't even begin to share how much you saved me. Cheers to having the same tenacity and determination that got me through this past year. #chingona P.S. Reflections on week one at Merit America. I wrapped up my first week at Merit yesterday. In case you didn’t know, they are a four-day workweek organization. Thursdays are known as “Merit Fridays,” I am trying to think of a clever name for my new first Saturday of the three-day weekend. I tend to forget how much drinking from the fire hose the first several weeks of a new job brings. This week was no different. The differences, though, have stood out, and I wanted to call them out here. 1. Everyone is friendly and supportive. There is a tool for colleagues to publicly recognize each other for living the organization's values, and I swear yesterday, I had 20-plus new alerts every time I checked. It is part of the weekly check-ins for staff, and to see all the shout-outs was terrific. 2. The co-CEOs have a BIG vision and aren’t afraid to answer the tough questions. They are open to conversations and hold space on their calendars for staff to share thoughts. How cool is that? CEOs could 100% take a page from their book. 3. A handful of people reached out to introduce themselves AND referenced the authenticity and vulnerability of my job search posts and how much they appreciated them. 😊🫣🥰 y’all, they liked me being me. 4. The organization moves fast. Many big things are coming, and I am thrilled to join the team. I look forward to quickly getting up to speed to add value. For now, I am off to enjoy my first Saturday- and welcome suggestions for what clever name I can use.

"Have you ever felt stuck in your position at work, but couldn’t quite figure out why?" I’ve been there – in that place where no matter how hard you work, no one seems to notice. You take on extra tasks, you’re always the one who says “yes,” and yet… promotions and raises still seem out of reach. It’s frustrating, right? I recently had a chat with a friend who stayed in the same role for years because she hoped that if she just worked a little harder, someone would finally recognize her efforts. Instead, she ended up burned out and feeling defeated. Sound familiar? 😞(Side note - I have a client in a similar situation and they were laid off after years of hard work in the same role just hoping to get recognized and promoted). The truth is, many of us, especially women (and even more so, women of color), face systemic challenges in the workplace. We find ourselves frustrated and even ashamed to admit that our careers aren’t where we hoped they'd be. It’s easy to think, “What am I doing wrong?” But what if the problem isn’t you? What if it's the system that undervalues you? What if your skills, experience, and potential are being overlooked because you’ve outgrown your current role, and it’s time to look outside the box? It takes courage to admit when it's time to make a change. Sometimes, all it takes is the bravery to ask yourself: “What do I truly want for my career? Am I being held back by comfort, or is there something bigger out there waiting for me?” I'd love to hear your thoughts: Have you ever felt stuck or undervalued in your role?
