The 8+8+8 rule is a powerful and practical framework designed to promote balance and holistic well-being in our daily lives. It divides the 24 hours in a day into three equal parts: 8 hours for work or productivity, 8 hours for rest and rejuvenation, and 8 hours for leisure, self-care, and personal growth. This approach acknowledges the multifaceted nature of human needs, emphasizing that true well-being is not achieved through relentless productivity alone but through a harmonious blend of work, rest, and play. The first 8 hours are allocated to work or responsibilities—be it your job, studies, or household duties. This segment allows individuals to meet their professional goals, fulfill obligations, and make meaningful contributions. However, the rule also subtly encourages us to work smarter, not harder, reminding us that productivity isn’t about overextending ourselves but about being focused and efficient. It challenges the "always-on" culture, advocating instead for structured work hours that enable us to fully disengage when it’s time to rest. The second 8 hours are for sleep, a pillar of mental and physical health. Sleep is often undervalued in today’s fast-paced world, but this rule highlights its importance in repairing the body, consolidating memories, and regulating emotions. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to burnout, anxiety, and even physical illnesses, so treating sleep as a non-negotiable priority rather than an afterthought is crucial. By committing to a full 8 hours of rest, we equip our minds and bodies to face challenges with resilience and clarity. The final 8 hours are perhaps the most liberating, dedicated to leisure, self-care, and personal connections. This time allows for engaging in activities that bring joy and foster a sense of purpose, whether it’s pursuing hobbies, exercising, meditating, or spending time with loved ones. It’s a chance to nurture your passions, reflect on your goals, and cultivate relationships that enrich your life. For some, this may mean going for a walk in nature, reading a good book, or simply doing nothing—unapologetically. These hours are vital for mental health as they help to counteract stress and recharge the emotional batteries. Ultimately, the 8+8+8 rule serves as a gentle reminder that our days are not solely defined by the tasks we complete or the goals we achieve. They are also shaped by how we care for ourselves and connect with the world around us. Embracing this rule is a step toward a more fulfilling, balanced, and mentally healthy life, where you can thrive without sacrificing your well-being in the process. This is not applicable for ppl who spend about 2 to 3 hours a day for travel, 1-2 hours of daily household works. Not possible for most common office-goers! 😕 I wish everyone to find their own balance and be at peace with it! ✌🏻 Happy 2025 all 😊
Much as there are laudable formulae for integrating balance into life, while the principles are sound, the practicalities often fall short for those with varied lifestyles and demanding schedules. This is especially true for individuals in high-stress occupations with rota'd work patterns and resource limitations, where balance can feel out of reach. However, for leaders who can take a progressive approach to shift workplace culture, this advice is a valuable framework for fostering balance. For everyone else, even small, intentional changes can help weave elements of balance into daily life, no matter how challenging. But at the end of the day it's the high stress professions - nurses, emergency services and so on - who need this the most and likely are least able to have opportunity to find the balance that is essential to wellbeing and performance.
888 is often regarding as the number of great fortune in China. There is no greater fortune than our wellbeing. Thank you for sharing.
Great insight on the 8+8+8 rule! 👏 This balanced approach reminds us of the importance of integrating work, rest, and leisure into our daily lives for holistic well-being. It's a powerful reminder that productivity doesn’t mean overextending ourselves, but working smarter and creating space for personal growth and self-care.
Thanks!! My father always told me..! : 8+8+8 🤔🤔🤔 But he worked so hard..? And never .. One hour at Home for lunch..? Yes!! And holidays?? One month?? As I remember..🤔🤔 Never!! ❤️❤️❤️
If only this were possible for the majority of us. I can remember learning in sociology class (many years ago) that there’s a correlation between cultures that work fewer hours and life expectancy. For example a tribe in South America (if I’m remembering correctly) has the longest life expectancy on earth, and devotes an average 6 1/2 hours of their day to work.
Thanks for sharing this; it's a valuable reminder to prioritize balance in our creative work and lives.
I love this! Very powerful formula that definitely needs a try. If we’re travelling for work, then 8 hours are a bit difficult.
Love this!

2dThe whole notion of work life balance or in this instance work life sleep balance is misleading and unrealistic. People who buy into this are set up to fail because it simply can’t work for pretty much everyone. It’s a worthy ideal to keep in mind but at best it is a guide. Everything being neat and even like 8-8-8 is just unrealistic. Work life harmony is a much more realistic way of approaching life. Work, sleep and life must co-exist and to do so there will be ebbs and flows of tempo, time and opportunity. Knowing that all three are important is crucial so that they are not forgotten but rather than having everything balanced, aim to invest in each as much as is possible when it is possible. So if one night sleep is down, seek a chance to make it up on another night. Similarly, if work is the dominant priority at any given time, extra hours may be needed there, but seek time to rest, recover and do life when those chances present.
