TALKING TO AN EMPLOYER ABOUT YOUR CAREGIVING RESPONSIBILITIES It's difficult when caring for one's own immediate family, working full or even part time, and being a caregiver for another; more so when they live at a distance. I know from personal experience. What policies have your employers implemented to support employees who also have caregiving responsibilities? November is National Family Caregivers Month to honor the more than 53 million unpaid caregivers who support aging parents or relatives, ill spouses or children with special needs. The Conversation Project's blog, How to Talk to Your Employer About Your Caregiving Responsibilities, is full of tips on clear communication, FMLA, employee resource groups, and flexible work arrangements. “As our society continues to age, reablement services will only become more important in helping people to regain their independence, live well and enjoy a good quality of life. It is therefore crucial that we always strive to improve practice and boost outcomes wherever possible.” https://lnkd.in/eaDGrF5v Read our latest blog from Deborah Rozansky, our Director of Policy, Research and Information, about the importance of reablement services within social care and new guidance developed by a team led by Bryony Beresford at the University of York to boost user engagement for better outcomes. The more people engage well with reablement, the more likely they are to avoid ongoing care, easing pressure on themselves, their families, the NHS and the wider social care system. #SocialCare #Reablement #ReablementServices #ReablementEngagement

In senior living , our purpose goes beyond ensuring safety or prolonging life. It is to enable well-being—fostering connection, purpose, and joy. Atul Gawande, in Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine, and What Matters in the End, writes, "We've been wrong about what our job is in medicine. We think our job is to ensure health and survival. But really it is larger than that. It is to enable well-being." His words resonate deeply in senior living. Like medicine, our field must shift from simply extending years to enriching the lives within them. Gawande argues that society often overlooks the fact that the sick and aging have priorities beyond safety or longevity. They seek autonomy, purpose, and dignity. In senior living, we have a profound opportunity—and responsibility—to meet these needs. Experience Senior Living's mission of 'Creating community with purpose' is one way to enable well-being. Purpose gives meaning to our days and allows individuals to thrive, regardless of age or health. By designing environments where residents are valued and connected, we empower them to live fully in the time they have. I recently discovered The Conversation Project, https://lnkd.in/eZ9TgxZg where Gawande serves as an advisor. It provides practical resource to helps individuals and families have meaningful discussions about end-of-life wishes. Their emphasis is on values—on "what matters to you, not what’s the matter with you." The website offers practical guides, including resources for navigating these conversations when a loved one has dementia. While I am new to this resource, I believe it’s a valuable tool to help families ensure care aligns with personal priorities and values. Let’s lead the way in enabling well-being—not just by meeting physical needs, but by addressing the emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of life. It starts with community. It thrives on purpose. And it grows through conversations that honor the humanity of every individual. #ElevateThis #LightTheWay
