[PROJECT UPDATE] REFRESH is mainly focused on #recycling and #repurposing strategies (end-of-life approach) for end-of-use wind turbine blades, but the eco-design approach is also being applied to a wide range of re-manufactured products from the EoL blades. Among these new products other components for wind energy sector are being considered. Our partner CETMA is leader of Work Package 6: Circular by Design, which deals with the project’s design for #circularity strategy and life cycle assessment (#LCA) activities. As part of this work CETMA is developing the REFRESH #ecodesign strategy. During the first year of the project, CETMA has made great progress formulating circular eco-design guidelines for the manufacturing of new products based on secondary raw materials resulting from the REFRESH recycling processes. [ PRESS RELEASE ] Strategies to build a #circular economy for #wind energy include extending the lifespan of wind turbines, improving their recyclability, and minimising waste. The EU-funded #EOLIAN project aims to facilitate this transition by developing rotor #blades with a longer service life than current designs, which are simpler to maintain and #repair, and easier to #recycle. The EOLIAN blade will be manufactured using composite materials based on a bio-based repairable and recyclable vitrimer matrix reinforced with basalt fibres. A structural health monitoring system will be embedded into the blade to enable early detection and repair of damage. New #sustainable #vitrimer #composites – repairable, reprocessable, and easily recyclable – will provide a step change in how wind turbine blades are maintained, reused and recycled in a circular economy. Great news announcement! 🔊 New €17 million European GAMMA project for the New e-fuels Climate-Neutral Shipping. 🚢 Aurelia Green Ship Concept Design will gather the threads of the technical project coordination in GAMMA, first leading the technical specification and now the innovative transition between a range of technical competences across the 16 partners from all over Europe, retrofitting a bulk carrier, replacing the auxiliary engine with a new e-fuel system. The five-year GAMMA project will contribute to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to around net-zero by 2050 for the maritime sector. This will include covering and supervising the ammonia/methanol/hydrogen systems and the whole engineering tasks behind the design and the integration of new green technologies into the ship without compromising its operational capabilities. This will be based on a trade-off between weight, volume, cost and, above all, safety. Our challenge is to consider how the systems will impact on the current vessel and to maintain safety in all operations. A new big step toward green shipping, reducing carbon footprint, toward a faster net-zero. This project will be a shifting point in energy transition and decarbonization, and Aurelia Green Ship Concept Design is delighted to be part of the change and proud to work with great partners to achieve this promising goal.
